How to Use Anti-Virus Applications

Protecting your personal computer from disaster often leads to a need to download and install a free or paid anti-virus application. Most of these applications are user-friendly and come with clear instructions for the download and installation process. Additionally, they typically include regular updates to assist with remaining current with existing threats to the security of computers and the data they contain on them. No matter which type of anti-virus application you decide to obtain, the following tips can prove to be quite helpful in protecting your computer.

Use the Anti-Virus Application

Once you go through the effort to obtain your anti-virus application, make sure that you use it on a regular basis. Some of these programs are set up to function in real time all of the time. Other applications are designed so that you can decide when to use it. Although you don't need to run a full scan every day, you should consider doing so at least once a week. If you have been accessing suspicious websites or notice suspicious activity on your computer, both of those are good indicators that it is time to run your anti-virus application.

Update the Anti-Virus Application

It is important to update your anti-virus application on a regular basis in order to keep it effective in removing infections from your computer. As viruses are modified to escape detection by anti-virus programs, modifications are created to these security programs to keep up with the changes. Without the updates, your anti-virus application will not remain current and some viruses might slip through the scan undetected. Some anti-virus applications offer a feature that allows you to update it automatically, while others might require users to visit the website for the application. Updates generally are free to obtain.

Research the Results of the Anti-Virus Scan

Depending on the particular anti-virus application that you are using, your program might generate some false positives. A false positive occurs when a particular application comes up in the list of infections when, in fact, it is not a form of malware. If your anti-virus scan results include any applications that you are not sure are in fact a virus or some other form of malware, do a quick search for it online and find out before removing it from your computer. If you are sure that the listed programs are forms of malware, simply follow the instructions you are given to remove them.
