American Idol Top 8 Girls: Performance Evaluations
American Idol Top 8 Girls: Katie Stevens - Leading off the Top 8 girls, Katie took to the stage first with her rendition of "Break Away" by Kelly Clarkson. I always think it's risky for any contestant to sing a song by a previous American Idol winner or contestant. Unless of course, they put a completely different spin on the song. Unfortunately, Katie was weak tonight and struggled with a song that may have been too big for her. The judges have been giving Katie a lot of advice since she seems to not know what kind of singer she is yet. Simon actually gave her kudos for taking their advice and trying to work it out. But the judges still think she has a lot of work ahead of her.
American Idol Top 8 Girls: Siobhan Magnus - Siobhan was up next singing "House of the Rising Sun" by the Animals. She dedicated the song as a tribute to her dad. Nice song choice, not something your typical American Idol contestant chooses. Siobhan starts out the beginning of the song a capella giving a cool vibe to her performance. Ellen loved her rendition and said Siobhan's performance was why she loves music. It moved her. Kara and Randy liked the performance as well but Simon thought it was a bit weird, boring and dark.
American Idol Top 8 Girls: Lacey Brown - Wearing a leopard jacket and skinny jeans, Lacy sang "The Story" by Brandi Carlisle. Simon did not love her song choice. He believes she hasn't made the right song connection yet. The other three judges disagreed and felt it was exactly the type of song Lacey should be singing and the type of record she needs to make.
American Idol Top 8 Girls: Katelyn Epperly - "I Feel the Earth Move" by Carole King was Katelyn's song of choice tonight. Sitting at the keyboard, Katelyn gave a rather uninspired performance. More like she was going through the motions. Ellen said she needed step it up this week to move people to pick up the phone and call. From the judges comments, Katelyn's efforts to make it to the Top 12 could be in jeopardy.
American Idol Top 8 Girls: Didi Benami - Singing "Rhiannon" by Fleetwood Mac, Didi was able to impress the judges with her version of the song. After last week's brutal reviews, the judges were glad to see she was able to rise above it. Simon really liked it even saying that was a "wow" moment for Didi and she proved she was truly an artist.
American Idol Top 8 Girls: Paige Miles - Paige was up next singing "Smile" by Charlie Chaplan. Decked out in black and silver, Paige took a risk choosing a song like that for an important week on American Idol. Unfortunately, her risk did not pay off and she may be going home on Thursday. By far, the worst performance of the night. Simon's comments: "It was a horrible choice of song, the arrangement was awful. It was a peanut performance, like sitting at a bar eating peanuts. You've got no idea who you are. I think this could be the end of the road." Ouch!
American Idol Top 8 Girls: Crystal Bowersox - Crystal played the electric guitar for a cool rendition of "Gimme One Reason" by Tracey Chapman. Crystal blew the panel of judges away as they proclaimed her performance the best of the night. Simon took it one step further saying Crystal was the one to beat. I'm in complete agreement with Simon.
American IdolTop 8 Girls: Lilly Scott - Rounding out the Top 8 girls, Lily chose Patsy Cline's "I Fall to Pieces" as her song selection tonight. Randy loved the mandolin but I feel she could have done just as well without it. Ellen loved her originality. Kara was surprised at how Lily was able to make Patsy Cline feel current. Simon didn't think she had the 'wow' factor and could be at risk of going home.
The top 8 girls now have to wait until Thursday night to find out the results. The bottom two girls and the bottom two guys will be going home revealing the top 12 American Idol contestants
American Idol airs on Tuesdays 8/7c, Wednesdays 9/8c and Thursdays (the results show) 8/7c on Fox.
