Avoiding Colds During the Winter Season

Catching colds in the winter time is a natural and dangerous problem we have and need to get control of to slow the spread of germs. The average adult American has at least 2 to 4 colds a year. Kids have around 5 to 10 colds a year. Kids also tend to catch more colds as well as spread them faster than adults.

Cold season is associated with the dreaded winter. Cold season usually begins around Labor Day, but spreads quickly during the winter months. There is nothing worse than having a stuffy nose, headache, sore throat along with nausea. All this can be avoided or minimized by taking some simple preparation steps to protect oneself against the winter season. There are many things you can do to ward off the sniffles and the common colds of winter.

Keeping the hands clean is an important step towards slowing the process of catching the common cold. By touching things and the hands always being exposed to multiple germs it is in our best interest to staying health this winter. Young kids spread colds by playing in big groups, being in populated schools, spending too much time out in the icy weather. Washing hand after all physical encounters is necessary. It is also good to have some anti bacterial spray or wash available around the house for family and friends to wash their hands.

Staying properly clothed is also an important factor in avoiding the common cold. We all, well most of us like to play in the snow and enjoy the winter time but there is nothing fun about being sick. Taking up the habit to wear long undergarments will also aid in avoiding a cold. We might not be able to control the weather but we can control the way we prepare for the winter. Wearing scarves, gloves and a skull cap are proper ways to dress before stepping out into the cold. Keeping the face properly covered is also important.

It is important to get yearly checkups from your family doctor to future ensure you as to what measures you must take to stay to your best health this winter. If you are the type who likes to take morning showers then wake up early enough to fully dry yourself. Staying informed on your health status is seriously important and can be life saving. Most of us never know until we are in the hospital because of an illness. Even if you do not have health insurance, there are free clinics in almost every city that will welcome the uninsured so get checked.

Making sure your car is properly started and heated is also important. Upon waking up if your car is not housed in a temperature room then it is best to start it so it will heat up and also run properly which will future help ensure your safety within the vehicle. Nobody likes to break down. Check your fluids regularly. Windshield wiper fluid is important for driving visibility to clear the mush. Hey it is better to be safe than sorry. Try to keep the gas tank at least on half full.
Make sure you have a spare tire and if so then make sure it is properly inflated.

Keep yourself informed on what the weather is going to be like before just stepping out into the blistering winter chill. Living in western Pennsylvania, we get some bad and very cold winter seasons. Most of the time during the winter season, it's hard to commute to and from work. Traffic is always backed up and the roads are icy as well as a few wrecks. Emergency crews and police officers work hard to clear the roads as well as the accident obstacles to help restore somewhat safety and to resume the flow of traffic.

Many server illnesses due to colds cause many medical problems as well as deaths during the winter season. People living in the streets are doing whatever possible to keep warm as well as alive during this vicious winter season. Here in Pennsylvania we have many shelters to house a lot of the homeless but not nearly enough. With citizens setting up soup kitchens for the homeless during this blistering cold winter season, it helps to at least give them something warm in them.

Managing your heat during the winter is one of the most important things to remember during the winter. We tend to use it more due to the low temperatures outside and sometime forget that our bill is rising. High gas bills can be very high during the winter season and can be a big pain but it is a needed utility. No heat means, No hot water. No hot water means no or cold showers which leads to catching a common cold or worse the flu.

Don't wait until next winter to start preparing yourself better for the winter start now. It is for your own good. Thanks for reading.

    nice work. there's also a dissolvable tablet that has lots of cold-fighting properties. It's called airborne and it tastes terrible, but it's great for teachers, office workers, or people going on long flights.

    Yes, hand washing seems to be the best prevention. We're helping our toddler learn to wash hands frequently to try and cut down on the number of colds he brings home.
