Benefits of Electronic Personal Medical Histories

I have had to pick up my medical records from the medical record office of a large hospital and have had the opportunity to see the record file room overflowing with tons of patients' charts. So when I hear the terminology "Electronic Personal Medical Histories" I say, "WOW! Bring it on."

This technology is among some of the best innovations for my, yours and everyone else's' improved health care. Here are some ways that doctors can improve our health care by using Electronic Personal Medical Histories.

Saving Time and Effort
I would never have to pick up my chart again from a medical record office. All of my medical history, information and other data would be securely stored in a computer.

Accessibility
My physician would have immediate access to all of my information and would more efficiently and effectively be able to retrieve my data and prescribe any necessary care much faster. With the use of PDA devices/Palm Devices in some hospitals, the physician can down load information to his PDA and not have to go to a computer to get some of my data. He would have it readily available, how convenient?

Speed
The speed of Electronic Personal Medical Histories can be likened to an E-mail vs. snail mail. It is quick and easy. My physician can quickly and easily send any referrals or consultations to a specialist and receive a response in hours rather than wait for days or weeks. This would expedite my care which will be an advantage.

Organization
This devise would keep my medical information organized, more accurate and easily retrievable. This would be much better than the physician having to read through large quantities of paper data. This would allow the physician to spend more of his time taking care of his patients.

Accuracy
Electronic Personal Medical Histories tend to be more accurate, as the physician would immediately record improvements, changes and any other necessary data in my records. He could flag important information so other care givers will be alerted, such as an allergy to a medication. This would improve the safety of my care.

Time Saving.
Time is valuable. The amount of time saved with the use of a device such as this, would benefit the patient care team and improve the quality of care to each and every patient.

This technology would not only allow doctors to improve everyone's health care, it would also reduce the cost of health care, save trees and improve the environment.
