It was 1985. I was 8 years old. I didn't believe in Santa Claus anymore and my parents were asking me what I wanted for Christmas. I kept seeing commercials for a new video game system I never heard of before. It was called the Nintendo Entertainment System. I remember thinking it looked really fun. The games looked so much better then on the Atari consoles. I asked for the Nintendo, but I really didn't think I would get it because it seemed like it would be very expensive.
On Christmas morning, I woke up and even before I got near the tree; I could see the top of a huge box. The Nintendo packaging was so big that my parents didn't bother wrapping it. I received the deluxe bundle which included the console, two controllers, the gun accessory, R.O.B. the robot, the games Duck Hunt and Gyromite. I also got a few other games as well like Clu Clu Land and Mario Brothers. From the moment my dad set up the console, I started playing. I soon fell in love with the Nintendo and had a great time playing all the games.
As the years went by, I continued to play the original Nintendo system. Every Christmas, I would receive more games. My favorite became the Legend of Zelda series. I had both original 8-bit Nintendo Zelda games. I would spend hours playing them until I got good enough where I could beat the first Zelda game without stopping or dying. To this day, I still love the Legend of Zelda series and buy each new game as it is released.
Getting the original 8-bit Nintendo system is my favorite childhood Christmas memory. Since I received the console, video games have become a huge part of my life and who I am. I'm glad I got the Nintendo when I did because I have seen the evolution of video games first hand. It's always exciting to see what being released next. Christmas is when the consoles release some of their most anticipated new games. It always reminds me of when I was a kid and had to wait until Christmas for that great new game.
