How to Find the Right Product to Sell?

Steve McMains
It is profitable to start a retail store if you know what to sell, where to sell and how to source them at the best price. These are some of the basic things that you must consider before starting up a retail store. Though all these parts are interconnected, the most important part is identifying the right product.

People visit different trade shows and wholesale market to find the right product at the best price. This step is fine when you have decided what you want to sell and you have reviewed different aspects of the business.

How to find the right product to sell?

There are different parameters to evaluate and identify the right product. However, before you get into the evaluation process you must shortlist some products or product categories that you may like to sell. Once you have identified the products, you can follow the following conditions to select the final product:

1. Opportunities to sell: some products have a ready market and in some situations, you will need to create the market. Some products are easily marketable and some are not. In some situations, you can easily reach the target market and sometimes you would need to work hard to find them. If you do not have any clear idea about the market of a product, it is always better to avoid it. Why should you open a store if you are not sure about the target market and how to reach them! For example, if you want to open a SUV showroom, you must have access to people who may be interested to buy them. Otherwise, you will need to wait for them to drop in your showroom. If you want to start a successful business, always count on what you have rather than what may happen.

2. Profit: Some products will have huge sales volume with less profit margin and some products will sale less with bigger profit margin. The profit you can earn also depends upon other conditions like how cheap you can source that particular product. This also includes other costs of getting the wholesale product to your showroom and sending it to customer's doorstep. Now add these with other expenditures like establishment expenditure, salary, decoration, etc. These calculations are very important, as these would determine how much profit you could make by selling the product. The most crucial aspect of this calculation is that you must be sure about how many units you can sell every month. Some suppliers will be able to provide you some data of other areas but it is always better to do some survey before you start the store.

3. Popularity: You may come across some products that are already highly established brands and the manufacturer spend enough money on advertising the product regularly. Thus, you will get a ready market to consume what you sell. In other situations, you might need to sell the product all on your own. Thus, the effective cost of the product goes high. Apart from these things, you also need to find out if you have the market ready to consume your product or not.

You should also think about other issues like quality, competition, consumption etc. to find out the right product to sell.
