WTH Are You Talking About Anyway?!?

Susan Pettrone
As if life on the internet isn't confusing enough these days, it seems email and chat talk is becoming more and more confusing. Now I am one of those people who loves to save time when I write and I try to keep my missives as simple as possible. But when I began to get these "coded" notes from my young niece it occurred to me that acronyms were slowly but surely taking over our world.

When instead of a simple "thank you for the gift, you are not just my aunt but my friend...and I'll see you later" I received a note that said "TYVM for the gifts and UR my BFF! TTFN", I knew I was in trouble. But silly me, I thought maybe it was limited to internet "speak", did I ever find out differently and fast!

These crazy acronyms have even began to sneak into our day to day SPOKEN conversation. Why, I over heard some women the other day in the mall talking about LOL and WTF with giggles and guffaws. I felt like I'd been dropped into an assembly of the UN without a translator. Was I confused. It seemed to me that the women had gone off the BEND with their strange strained speak.

Then I realized that it wasn't the women that needed help, it was me! I needed to bone up on my acronym knowledge or risk being left in the lurch by all the BBF and OMG in everyday life. What I found upon searching was amazing! Acronymfinder.com was a lifesaver for this not so savvy aunt and I honestly believe you'll think so too should you check it out!

For example: did you know that there are over 500,000 acronyms used by people on a regular basis in this day and age? WTH (what the heck) is going on? There are SO many of them that more often than not, it's virtually impossible to figure out what the person is telling you without help or at least a knowledgeable teenager by your side. I decided that if I didn't want to be left in the lurch with out a paddle, I'd better bone up on my knowledge PDQ!

Acronym Finder is a life saving device! Acronym Finder contains more than 3 million acronyms and abbreviations. And the acronyms and abbreviations are broken down by category so it's easy to find what you're looking for!

Or to do a generic search you can use Acronym Attic which is also operated by Acronym Finder.

Here are some examples of a few of the acronyms commonly used today:

AFAIK = As Far As I Know
ICBM = Intercontinental Ballistic Missile
BRB = Be Right Back
TYVM= Thank you very much
BFF= best friend forever
LUL= love you lots
RUK= are you kidding?

IIRC = If I Remember Correctly
TTFN = Ta Ta For Now

    do you think you could spam the site any more than you already have? Give me a break.....your spamming is not going to attract any more readers to your site than a decent review might.

    This is a great idea. It would be nice to have in a toolbar.
