A surprise to many Christians, popular Christian music singer Jennifer Knapp, who won awards in the late 1990's and was nominated for a Grammy, has come out of the closet after disappearing seven years ago to announce that she is a lesbian.

According to Knapp, she left the Christian music market and moved to Australia due to both the pressures of being a popular music artist, as well as the difficulty of performing for an audience that would feel betrayed if they knew they were buying the records of a gay individual.

Knapp has been a relationship with a woman for the last eight years, and has announced this news shortly before her new record, "Letting Go", is released in a few weeks. Her new record is not being released by a record label, and Knapp will no longer be marketed as a Christian singer, something she finds preferential over her past status in the music industry.

Her fans have expressed a mix of indifference, grief, and anger, all expected emotions for any artist that comes out of the closet, not just a Christian artist. Some churches are already crying out against her, while others are embracing her.
