2. Make sure you close and lock any and all windows and doors - especially when you go out anywhere even if only for a couple of minutes.
3. Make sure you have adequate home insurance.
4. Join a neighbourhood watch scheme or similar. Look out for your neighbours and they will look out for you.
5. When you go away or out for a long period of time try to leave an appliance on to make your house look as though it is lived in and not empty.
6. Get deadbolt locks on front doors, back doors and patio doors, and anywhere else as and where required.
7. Make sure that when you move into a home you have all the keys and locks changed. Get new locks, bolts and keys. Remember that unless you are moving into a new build you do not know who lived in that house before you.
8. When you go away make sure family and friends know, and get them to check on your property at different times of the day to make sure everything is ok.
9. Always make sure that you have a burglar alarm installed, and always check regularly that it is in working order.
10. Get a guard dog OR if you don't fancy a dog then put up beware of the dog signs - warn people off.
11. Invest in CCTV. Check with your local council as to what you can and can't have but investing in CCTV or similar may well help deter burglars and unwanted guests.
Always stay safe when it comes to keeping your home/house safe. Try to keep burglars away with a series of legal methods.
