In my youth, I was often told I wasn't smart enough, talented enough or pretty enough. These things dragged me down into a pit of despair and self-loathing. It is something that I deal with to this day. It's a constant battle, but one that I wage with gusto, and one that fills me with pride for every hurdle I overcome.
The first step to overcoming negative programming is something that you will see frequently in this book: learning to ignore what other people say, and learning that they are flawed. People will hurt you because they are insecure or jealous. You cannot allow these people to have power over you. It's like letting the town idiot run the city. It makes a mess that you can never clean up.
You need to believe in yourself. Regardless of what anyone has ever said about you, you need to believe that you can overcome, and you can be your absolute best. You're on this journey for you, not anyone else. Being a person that you love and are happy with is the goal.
Believing in yourself, and knowing that the people who tear you down are not good people, is a big boost in the right direction. Now you have to take one step at a time in getting over the things that have been drilled into your head all these years.

Finding the way to overcome programming is something that is different for every person. There really is no right or wrong way. For me, I found that learning why people did or said things to me was a big help. Also, I changed where I was living, and surrounded myself with people that were open-minded, kind, and on their own journeys to personal empowerment.
It's also important to think to yourself, is their opinion really important? Once you realize the insignificance or some people's words, you can break yourself free of the things that they say to you and about you.
