Reality TV

Donna Cavanagh
We have lost track of reality
It is buried ironically in reality TV
There in that world we find the oddest of heroes
Whose stupidity seems to set us free

Their desire to grasp onto infamous fame
Their battle to hold onto sober coherence
Amuses viewers as they tune in each week
To watch another sub-celebrity court appearance

In real life -- which is not reality TV
Most of these people have not talent to spare
But their goals to be famous catch the eyes of producers
And so on television their idiocy we wait to share

They do not seem to care that are portrayed as losers
They do the talk show circuit and attend all of the awards
And they complain about the pressures that come with being a star
That drives them to jail or the psychiatric wards

But do not worry about reality stars
They do not need talent - no, that they can steal
With their pseudo fame they can start their own fashion label
Or perhaps ink a six-figure publishing deal

Alas, what about the viewers - their loyal fans
Who so admire the reality star's fame?
Do they lose their sense of right and wrong?
Do they see reality TV is but a game?

I guess we can always hope
That raising sextuplets or whoring at the shore
Will lose its appeal in the not so distant future
And quality writing will replace reality TV once more

I love my fiance's face when I watch "Jersey Shore". My sexy old man is always all, "WTF?! Is this real? Is this a joke? Who is that ugly chick with the huge hair? Did I just see an ass?" and looks at me like I'm nuts. I only watch it when he's in the room because he just doesn't get it's not scripted TV and his reactions are hilarious.

We can only hope. The ironical thing is that reality TV is so unlike reality. Good work Donna.
