Reese's Peanut Butter and Banana Creme Cups and One of Elvis' Favorite Foods

I was in the checkout line at Giants a few weeks ago when I noticed the big display of Reese's candy bars dedicated to Elvis.

Now what in the world did Elvis have to do with Reese's cups, I wondered?
As I read over the candy bar labels I discovered that they were not regular Reese's cups in the display stand. The Elvis' Reese's, 'The King,' king-sized big cup candy actually was filled with peanut butter AND banana crème filling! That was really gross, I thought.

Later, as I drove home, it crossed my mind once more. Now, I am a die-hard chocoholic and I really haven't found anything yet that involved chocolate that I don't like. Of course there are things I prefer, but nothing thus far has totally turns me off. Well, bananas are a fruit, much like jelly coming from fruit. And fruit and peanut butter go well together; peanut butter and grape jelly, or apple jelly, or strawberry jelly. All are do-able. I have dipped bananas in peanut butter before, and even had peanut butter covered apples with raisins. Those are good. I've also had fruit dipped in chocolate, and that was good. Okay, okay, so peanut butter and banana crème covered in chocolate is maybe not so bad after all. I decided I'd try it next time.

The next morning, I caught a segment on TV where they were sampling the new limited edition Elvis-inspired candy bars, and someone made mention of the fact that Peanut Butter and bananas was Elvis' favorite sandwich, but he also liked bacon on it. Ah! So there was the correlation between Elvis and the Reese's cups!

About a week later, I found myself in Giants again. My daughter had come down with a cold and I needed to pick up some things to make her some homemade chicken soup. I remembered the Reese's cups. They had been out as a limited edition, released in time for the anniversary of Elvis' death. I thought I had missed out, but fortunately the last checkout line I came to was where they'd moved the display.

Later, I tried the candy and was surprised at how thick it was, almost twice as thick as the regular Reece's cups. There really was not much of the banana crème filling inside either. Oh, you could definitely taste it, it was not overpowering, but mellow enough to blend well. The peanut butter filling was still just as prominent, and the chocolate was just right. The overall texture was smooth and creamy like always. I was almost surprised that I liked it so much. I would definitely get more before they were gone!

Next I guess I'll have to try the real thing and make the grilled peanut butter and banana sandwich he's so famous for. A little research and I found several variations on Elvis's favorite recipe for Grilled Peanut Butter and Banana Sandwiches. I've yet to try it, but I'll definitely keep it on hand for when they stop producing 'The King's' banana creme and peanut butter filled Reese's cups.

Peanut Butter and Banana Sandwich
3 tablespoons peanut butter
2 slices light bread
1 banana, mashed (another variation called for the bananas halfed and quartered length-wise and laid flat on the bread)
2 tablespoons margarine, melted

Mix soft peanut butter and mashed banana together. Toast bread lightly. Spread peanut butter and mashed banana on toast. Place into melted margarine; brown on both sides.

Best if served warm. Enjoy!
