A Mock-programming Puzzle Game

Timothy Liu
is a flash animation puzzle game distributed and sponsored by Armor Games and created by Newgrounds.com user Coolio-Niato, with the original concept by Matt Chase. The game's main theme song is titled Puzzling by Newgrounds.com user Shael-Riley. This mock-programming game was submitted to Newgrounds.com on September 11, 2008 and won a Daily 3rd Place award on September 12, 2008 as well as a Weekly 5th Place award on September 17, 2008.

Gameplay

The objective of the game is to light up all the blue tiles in each level. To do so, you must control a robot that can light up the tiles. To control the robot, you must give it commands.

The game begins with a few tutorial levels that will help you get the idea of controlling the robot using commands. The commands are placed in boxes on the right. The commands are read from left to right. All the available commands are shown at the top-right of the screen. You can tell the robot to move forward, turn left or right, jump, and light a tile. There are also two function commands that correspond to the commands that you place in the corresponding function boxes.

Once you think you have created the perfect command stream, you can press the GO! button at the bottom of the screen. The robot will then carry out those commands. If your program is successful, the robot will light up all the blue tiles, and you will be able to proceed to the next level. If your program fails to get the robot to light up all the blue tiles, then you will have to make some adjustments. The total number of commands you have used will appear at the bottom-right of the screen. An extra challenge would be to try and keep this number as low as possible.

If you play this game on Newgrounds.com, you can be awarded medals for completing a certain number of levels. Also, if you have cookies enabled, the game can save your current level and load from there the next time you want to play.

Review

< lightbot > is an addicting puzzle game with great replay value. The game concept is sweet and simple. The levels are not repetitive, with each level presenting a unique challenge that adds variety to the game. As players get better at the game, the extra challenge of trying to use the fewest commands possible will keep players playing for a long time.

< lightbot > scores a 9/10. Although the song is nice, having it change would be nicer.
