Valentine's Day Engagement Proposal Ideas

Heather Belle
Valentine's Day is one of the most romantic days of the year; and, if you have been waiting to ask that special someone in your life to marry you, Valentine's Day is a great choice for when to ask. You can make your proposal fun, romantic, a group event, just the two of you, adventurous, etc. The ideas are limitless; just put some time in to deciding what would mean the most to the two of you, as a couple. And, remember ladies! You can use these engagement proposal ideas for your significant other, too. Men do not have to be the only one popping the question anymore!

Bedroom Romance - You can set this engagement proposal idea up at your own residence, or if you have some extra money to spend, you can stay at a hotel for Valentine's Day and use the hotel room instead of your own bedroom. You will need to make sure your significant other is out of the picture long enough for you to set this up, too. So if you live together, make a plan to get him/her out of the house. Send your Valentine out on a few errands to give yourself enough time to prepare.

You will need to buy roses for this idea and tear the petals off in advance. (Make sure to just do this the night or morning of Valentine's Day so the petals do not dry out completely.) Then, sprinkle the petals on the floor leading in to the bedroom. On the bed (make sure you made the bed, too) spell out "Marry Me?" with the rose petals. Then, you can set candles around the bedroom, and have some chocolate covered strawberries and champagne on hand to celebrate.

If you set this up earlier in the day at your own residence and plan on going out to dinner before you propose but you want to use candles, have a friend or family member sneak over to light them while you are out. Or, if you decide to stay at a hotel for the night, make sure you ask the hotel their policies on candles; many hotels that are OK with flame candles will light them for you, or some hotels may tell you that you can only use the LED candles. (Those are the ones you can buy at any craft store that you place in a votive to make a flickering light with a light bulb.)

Most importantly, make sure you spell "Marry" correctly. I have actually seen pictures of this engagement proposal idea where the person proposing wrote "Merry Me?" Let your Valentine follow the rose petal trail in to the bedroom to see your proposal written out in rose petals. Make sure to drop down on one knee behind him/her so that is what they see as soon as they turn around.

Simple Proposal - If the two of you enjoy would enjoy a romantic Valentine's Day at-home, this is a great engagement proposal idea for you. Plan on a dinner for two using your favorite foods; just make sure to find recipes in advance and try them out. (Remember, practice makes perfect!) I highly recommend www.kraftfoods.com for some great, tasty, and easy-to-make recipes. You do not want to be stressing yourself out about making dinner as you will most likely be nervous about the proposal as is. Or, if you are not good in the kitchen, you can always cater-in from your favorite restaurant.

Then, after the two of you have eaten over a candle light, tell your significant other how much they mean to you. Talk about a few memories that you have of him/her that has helped you to become a better person. Drop down on your knee and ask for your special someone's hand in marriage.

A simple way to make this engagement proposal idea special is to put the engagement ring in a personalized ring box. Things Remembered (www.thingsremembered.com) sells a sterling silver box that you can have engraved (on the top.) My husband used this box for me and had a phrase that we say to one another ("Always and Forever") along with the date of our engagement engraved on the top. Now that we're married, I still use this box to store my wedding band and my engagement ring. It is a much better keepsake than the typical velvet boxes from a jewelry store.

Public Proposal - This is a great engagement proposal idea for Valentine's Day if you two are very close to your family and friends. Take your Valentine to a special, romantic restaurant that the two of you enjoy. But, make sure this restaurant has a small banquet or private room that you can rent out. After the two of you have eaten your dinner, drop down to your knee in front of everyone at the restaurant and ask your significant other to marry you.

Once he/she says yes, take your new fiancé back to the private room where your family and friends will be waiting for a celebratory dessert party. Depending upon your restaurant choice, this idea can be inexpensive or add up quickly. So, call around, but make sure you have enough time to plan this one out. But, this is a great engagement proposal idea that will allow you to celebrate with everyone important in your lives on a very significant day in your lives as a couple.

Adventurous Proposal - If the two of you enjoy doing adventurous things together, take your significant other sky diving on Valentine's Day. In advance, get a large, white sheet and paint "Marry Me?" on it in big, black letters. Call the place you are going to be sky diving at in advance and ask for their help; ask them if you can bring this sheet to them before Valentine's Day and if someone there will lay it out on the ground when you and your Valentine are up in the plane.

Then, as your Valentine takes that big jump out of the plane and floats towards the ground, this will be the first thing he/she sees from above. Let your significant other gain their bearings and then officially ask for their hand in marriage. You can also ask the sky diving staff if they will store a bottle of champagne and glasses to bring out after the proposal for you two to toast your new engagement. Most people love being involved in something as romantic as a proposal and will be more than willing to help.

Friends and Family Proposal - If you want to incorporate your friends and family in to your Valentine's Day proposal, this is a very special and personalized idea. Decide how many people you plan on inviting and buy that exact number of roses plus one. Then, print (or write) out that many reasons why you love your significant other and cut them in to individual thoughts/phrases. So, if you are going to include 13 friends and family members, buy 14 roses and make 13 small print-outs to attach to each rose. Once you have your print-outs, tie one on to each rose. For your last rose, write "Will You Marry Me?" on a sheet of paper and tie it on to the stem; this will be the rose you carry.

Take your Valentine out to dinner, but excuse yourself to the restroom near the conclusion of your meal. Make sure your friends and family are all gathered somewhere outside and that they are on time; say you are going to propose at 7:30pm, tell them to be waiting by 7:15pm to ensure everything runs smoothly. Find a way to sneak outside with the rest of your accomplices, then, begin sending each person in (one-by-one) with a rose (with the sweet message attached to it) to your Valentine. Have them hand your significant other the rose and walk back out. After the final person goes in and returns, you go back in to the restaurant and propose with your own special rose.

Or, if you do not want to include friends and family, you can call the restaurant in advance and ask if the server will bring the special roses to your table throughout your meal.

Silly T-Shirt - If you are a silly, laid-back couple who does not like to do anything traditionally, you can always propose with a t-shirt. Go to www.ebay.com and type in Bride (or, Groom if you are a woman proposing) t-shirt. There are always a ton of choices; just make sure to give yourself time for the t-shirt auction to end and for the t-shirt to be sent to you.

Then, wrap up the shirt and give it to your significant other as a Valentine's Day gift. So, if you are a male proposing to a woman, you will buy a t-shirt that says "Bride" on it and wrap it up. When your Valentine opens the t-shirt and looks utterly confused, use that moment to propose. You can even have a "Groom" (or, "Bride") shirt on underneath the shirt you are wearing as an additional surprise.

Just put some time and sincere thought in to your engagement proposal idea; this is going to be a day that both of you will remember for the rest of your lives. But, most importantly, remind yourself that no matter how nervous you are and how much planning you do, nothing ever goes perfectly. Enjoy yourself no matter if something does not work out exactly as you had planned, and make it a Valentine's Day that will not soon be forgotten.
