The competition to become part of the mob on 1 vs. 100 is fierce.
If you need extra money and you live in LA, you can do one of the following if you are so inclined - be an extra in a TV show or movie, be an audience member on a game show or be a contestant on a game show. It can be a lucrative venture. If you're able to break in.
To become an actress/actor is extremely hard. Yeah, you hear that every day but some people don't understand the time, effort and strings pulled that it takes to actually get there. Just finding gigs for extra work is not as easy as it sounds unless you're discovered walking on the street or get dumb luck by walking past a film set when they need people. Most of us have to work Craigslist.com or find talent agencies.
There are many postings on Craigslist.com which is a website where you can find just about any event, happening, job, or person in your area. It's it also a place where you can ask personal questions that you need to know the answer to and look up or place personal ads. And for actors and people who need work, it's the place to be.
So first, as an aspiring actor/actress, you find a post asking for extras and respond. They contact you and you come in to their office or studio. Then you pay a fee to be in their database and depending on which place you join, you can get work from time to time. Easy enough but getting enough work is difficult. The fees are also no guarantee that you will get work.
Next is being an audience member. Auditions for this kind of thing is always posted on Craigslist.com. You go in for a few hours at a studio in Hollywood or wherever for Carson Daly, Jimmy Kimmel or any other late night talk show or game show and you'll get between 15 dollars and 50 dollars for the day. Not a bad deal.
And lastly, there's the game show contestant. This is tough because most all the game show nowadays have to do with trivia. So not only do you have to be semi-smart but you have to be up on pop culture and historical facts.
So you find the ad for the show on Craigslist.com and e-mail whatever show it may be - Millionaire, Deal or No Deal or 1 vs. 100. They bring you in with a group of 200 hundred people and they take your photo and they quiz you. They give everyone random questions and you have to answer in a certain amount of time. Then a month or so later, you may or may not get a phone call saying you've got a spot on the show.
The only problem is that the cmeptition is fierce. I went to an audition for the show a few weeks ago and there were so many people there. There are still ads on Craigslist. They go through thousands of pictures and answer sheets to pick those who might do well or not do well on the show. It's the biggest show on TV right now besides Deal Or No Deal so everyone wants to be on it.
If you do get a spot on the show, you may not win. Sad. And if you do win, your winnings don't come to until 3 months after the show airs. Don't quit your day job, if you have one. It's a tough business but thousands of people try out all the time. They want that quick cash thing. And some of us just want to pay our rent. Unfortunately you might be on the street before your check comes.
