10 Animal Facts You Might Not Know

Ann Siper
With so many fascinating and unusual animals in the world, is it any wonder that children -- and many adults, for that matter -- are endlessly amazed by interesting animal facts? No matter how old we get, there always are new and interesting animal facts to discover, be they at the zoo, online or on television. Take a look at the ones below, and share them with the animal lover in your life today.

Elephants
These are popular animals in children's books and at the zoo, which is why interesting animal facts about this mammal are sure to make you laugh ... and possibly make the elephant laugh, too. Yes, that's right: Elephants can laugh. They also can cry.

Goats In many rural areas, it is common to have a goat or two on a piece of property, and in some cases, trees. That's right -- goats can climb trees. OK, you won't see goats at the local farm, hanging around in the trees. You will have to go to Morocco to see this exotic display.

Armadillo What animal sleeps almost 19 hours a day and gives birth to four offspring at a time? You might think both of these would be impossible, but not for the armadillo. Interestingly, each time an armadillo gives birth, its four offspring are the same sex.

Octopus These animals are among the most popular attractions at aquariums. That is where most people have the opportunity to see these beautiful creatures strut their stuff. While watching them float through the water behind a sheet of glass, most people probably don't even realize the octopus has three hearts.

Cats These cute and cuddly pets rival dogs in popularity. But what if you are allergic to all that fluffy hair? While you can find hypoallergenic dogs occurring in nature, you will need to resort to the genetically engineered variety to find an allergen-free cat.

Dolphins They might rival the octopus in popularity at your local aquarium, but how can you tell if a dolphin is sleeping? Dolphins sleep with one eye open, which makes it difficult to tell.

Mosquitoes They may not be a favorite among animals or humans, but their minute size belies the fact that they have 47 teeth. The next time you are camping, don't forget the bug spray.

Horned Toads These little fellows give new meaning to the term bloodshot eyes. When agitated, a horned toad squirts blood right out of its eyes.

Giraffes What has more bones in its neck: a human or a giraffe? While the length of a giraffe's neck may lead you to believe the answer is obvious, humans and giraffes have the same number of bones in their necks: seven.

Montana mountain goat Remember the last time you walked so much you thought your feet were going to fall off? Your feet have nothing on the Montana mountain goat. These wild goats butt heads with each other so aggressively that their hooves can fall off!
