10 Annoying Things You Should Avoid If You Are Blogging!

Regina Sunderland
Have you ever tried to build up a Blog? I mean not only write an occasional blog entry, but actually bring it from blank pages, posts, and designs to a Blog you can be proud to display and advertise? Perhaps you have dreamed of, or attempted to make money with your Blog and have found that this is nowhere as easy as those E-Books proclaim it should be.

Believe me, I have learned this Lesson the hard way, but I have also discovered some of the most annoying habits I as a novice Blogger and even more experienced Bloggers still make.

Here are the 10 most annoying things in the web wide world of blogging.

1. Music on the Blog.

Most of us have some sort of background noise going on when we are blog surfing, most of the time it is either a TV Show, Music of our own choice or someone talking to us. With other words it gets quiet disturbing if you are running your music as well.

2. Too many plug-ins or flash graphics

As lovely and exciting all those bells and whistles may be, they do slow the download time down as well. I have learned the hard way that you have about 7 seconds to make an impression on someone. If you can't get and keep their attention in those first few moments, they are more then likely to move on. Now if you are taking those first precious seconds up with download and start time you are already behind in that race.

3. Overdone or too hard to understand language

There is of course an exception to this particular Rule. If your Blog is a teaching Blog or requires specialized jargon then by all means keep those big one Million Dollar words. Most Blogs are just online dairies or Blogs for and by other everyday folks. Keep it simple!

4. Infrequent Updates

Again not something you think about when you first start out. When you create your first Blog and then write your first Blog Post you are certain that you will never run out of exciting and interesting things to say. You couldn't be any further from the truth. As with everything else in life, when something becomes a chore or must do, it becomes tedious. Nothing kills creativity faster then something you HAVE to do. Now in order for a Blog to gain Readership you need to have constant and regular updates. Regardless if you update daily or only a couple of times a week, make certain you will update it at a Rate you can keep up.

5. Spelling and Grammar

I have to point my finger at myself on that one a lot. I still have times when I simply mix my Grammar up and do not catch it, regardless of how hard I try. Since most of us do not have the luxury of having our very own Editor near by, this can be quiet the challenge. However, you can see if someone is earnestly giving it their best shot or if someone is just being sloppy and careless.

6. Too many words and nothing to say

I bet you have seen many Blogs like that yourself. These Posts are purely created to fill up space and push a product. There really isn't much content or meaning to them. I own 3 Affiliation Blogs (I call them that because this is where I publicize my Products or Services at.) and in those cases each Blog Entry is essentially a sells pitch. However, they are clearly marked for this purpose warning readers away if they are not in the mood for this type of content.

7. Misleading or the old Switch & Bait

To me there is nothing more disturbing then when I go to a blog and am browsing the post listings. I find a Heading which peaks my interest only to find that guess what the Article had nothing to do with the Title. Worth yet the entire Blog is about something completely different then the Search results claimed.

8. Over sexualized Photos to sell generic content

I know that sex sells and in adult oriented Blogs I expect those. After all you go to a Pornographic Blog you expect to see T&A or other select body parts. However, I am really getting tired of clicking on Blogs to see a Photo of some "hot Chick" with almost no clothe on talking about something completely non-related like Politics, Teaching, raising kids or SEO. Excuse me, but is that really necessary?

9. Too many Advertisements and not enough content.

Again, I understand making money with your Blog. I have advertisements on mine as well, but when you have more ads per space then you have content of value it is not a good idea. Most of the time it just gets annoying. I am looking in a Blog for the same thing I am looking for in a Website. Easy Navigation and quick upload time with at least partially worthwhile content.

10. No way to subscribe to your RSS Feed.

During a conference one year the question was brought up which would be the most important phrase on a Website. After a Poll was taken it turned out to be, drum roll please, "click here". You are seeing this correctly. As obvious as it seems that someone would click in the right spot to subscribe to your RSS feed, you are still better off assuming that this person is completely computer illiterate and you have to let him/her know that in order to accomplish this feat they need to click here!

I am sure there are many more which I have forgotten and believe me when I tell you that I still discover mistakes I myself make on a daily bases. These however seem to be the most reoccurring annoyances. The best advice I have ever received was to never stop fine tuning your Blog or Website until you have the results you want. Remember that nothing is build overnight; it takes many weeks or even month to make anything profitable. Don't give up on yourself and your project, but also never stagnate either.

Good luck with your Blogs and I hope you will make your "dreams" come true.
