10 Bad Movies Based on Comic Books

Holy Terrible Movie, Batman! These Films Are the Worst

Jennifer Amlie
Comic book movies are becoming increasing popular. It seems more and more are being released every year. Everyone wants to see their favorite hero or villain on the big screen. There are comic book movies I consider to be some of my all time favorite films. Unfortunately, some comic book movies are just awful. Here's a guide to the 10 worst.

Daredevil
:
It lacks the awe factor in other Marvel movies like Spiderman. The movie drags and the overused rock soundtrack is distracting. I was expecting so much more then this uninteresting, plain movie. In 2004, Director's Cut was released on DVD that polishes the movie up a bit.

Catwoman
:
Ranked one of the most disappointing blockbusters by Time, Catwoman looks like a thrown together mess. Poor acting, a plot that jumps all over and silly effects, this movie is just bad. Just because everyone knows of Catwoman, it doesn't mean people will flock to the movie.

X-Men Origins: Wolverine
:
This is a movie feels rushed and seems like it was only made to cash in on the comic book movie craze. To appease Marvel fans, it seems some characters that have no role in Wolverine's origin were included. None of them get enough screen time to figure out their purpose or care about them.

Batman and Robin
:
The 1990's Batman movies suffered a slow decline in quality and this one was the worst. It's silly and campy while trying to be a serious movie. One liners and clichés seem to make up the bulk of the script. This movie is featured as one of the worst comic book movies on Rotten Tomatoes' list.

Spawn
:
Based off of a very violent comic book, Spawn, received a PG-13 rating. That's usually a bad sign, since the comic is about a man sent to Hell and re-spawned to Earth as a member of Hell's army. The special effects are terrible. Malebolgia looks like something on a Saturday morning cartoon. The movie also suffers from pacing problems and a convoluted plot.

Elektra
:
Picking up where Daredevil off, this film is about Elektra's re-birth as an assassin. It's a spin-off of bad movie and manages to be worse. The movie is confusing as some parts of the story don't flow with what was presented in Daredevil. The flashbacks don't help the pace of the movie, either.

The Spirit
:
It might fall into the "so bad, it's good" category, but not for me. Barely watchable, The Spirit doesn't seem to know what type of movie it wants to be. It's a mix of bad one-liners, goofy action sequences, and a confusing story. This film makes little sense. Even though it was panned by critics, I thought I would enjoy it. I was mistaken.

The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen
:
It's difficult to believe this movie is based off of Alan Moore's work. It focuses on literary characters who come together in order to protect the world. If adapted properly, it would have been a great film. Instead the audience is given a poor script and a dumb down plot. A far better adaption of Moore's work is The Watchmen.

The Hulk (2003):
Bogged down by too much back story and not enough action, The Hulk is boring. Once the action does start, it moves so fast, it's hard to follow what's going on. I like movies with a good back story, but this one just dragged. The Hulk wasn't even in the first 45 minutes or so of the film. The 2008 reboot is the better movie.

Superman IV The Quest for Peace
:
A disappointed ending to the 1980's Superman movies, this was poorly produced and the special effects were horrible. Stock footage from the earlier films was used every time Superman took flight. The plot was ridiculous, with Superman trying to rid the world of nuclear weapons. It's just a disaster.

Not every comic is able to survive a big screen make-over, but that doesn't stop Hollywood from trying. Some times the movies are made in the hope that they will profit off the latest craze. Other times, perhaps, the comic has trouble translating to a different medium. Either way, the above movies aren't stellar representations of comic books or movies.

Daredevil is such a weird one – I know of at least two people whose taste in movies I typically respect who actually like it comparably to Spider-Man, the X-Men trilogy, etc. I have been trying to get my hands on the Director’s Cut for a while but never quite got around to it… hmph.

Great list, and I really wanted to like some of these movies. Too bad they were all rotten!

I can't believe how spot-on this article is! I totally agree & you even threw in a couple that I had forgotten about -- with good reason I guess LOL

Great list. I thought League was...ok, if a total disappointment when compared to the comic. I could at least sit through it a second time... Some of the others (like The Hulk) I didn't even make it through before I fell asleep.
