10 Best Cartoon Bands of All-time

Lee Andrew Henderson
Once a formula proves to be popular in television there will soon be many other television shows that copy the same idea. This was especially true for Saturday morning cartoons because kids weren't the sharpest knife in the drawer. Make a dozen shows like the most popular show and kids will watch. At one point in time the popular fad was to make cartoons about a band. These are some of the best cartoon bands of all-time.

10) Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kids
Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kids is a somewhat disappointing band compared to the movie of a similar name but as far as cartoon bands are concerned Butch and the Sundances are among the ten best.

9) The Archies
The Archies were a virtual band made up of Archie, Reggie and Jughead from The Archie cartoon. Unlike some of the other bands on this list, The Archies had actual albums that were released and one of their songs, "Sugar, Sugar", hit #1 on the Billboard Hot 100.

8) Jem and the Holograms
Jem and the Holograms is the name of the band in the television show Jem. My sister had one of the cassette tapes I never listened to it. Really, I didn't. If my first born child is named Jerrica Benton Henderson it is totally coincidence that it is also Jem's real name.

7) The Junkyard Band
The Junkyard Band was the name of the band formed by Fat Albert and the Cosby Kids. Fat Albert was created, produced, hosted and voiced by Bill Cosby. All of the kids in the Junkyard Band played homemade instruments like a bagpipe/accordion made out of a radiator and an airbag and a trash can and spoons for drums.

6) The Neptunes
The Neptunes were the band featured in the cartoon Jaberjaw. Jabberjaw was basically a Scooby Doo knock off except instead of a dog they ha a great white shark. The great white shark, Jabberjaw, also plays drums in the band.

5) The Beets
The Beets were the favorite band of Doug and Skeeter in the television show Doug. The Beets were a British rock band and were a parody of the Beatles, Rolling Stones and other famous British rock bands. Doug was originally a Nickelodeon show but was eventually acquired by Disney. When Disney took over the television series they broke up the Beets. What a buzzkill.

4) Dethklok
A search for the greatest cartoon bands on Google will bring up Dethklok number one on many lists. Despite loving Brendon Small's earlier work I could never get into Metalocalypse. They deserve to be included because of their popularity though I suppose.

3) Josie and the Pussycats
Before they were a bad idea for a live action movie the Josie and the Pussycats were a famous cartoon band. Josie and Pussycats solved crimes like Scooby Doo but also played music, which would often play during the pivotal scene where the Pussycats would chase after or be chased by the villain.

2) Alvin and the Chipmunks
Before they were a bad idea for two live action movies Alvin and the Chipmunks also had their own television program. The Chipmunks sold albums and "The Chipmunk Song" was the number single in the United States. The Chipmunks also had an animated movie as well as two live action movies with CGI chipmunks. Alvin and the Chipmunks are definitely the most recognizable cartoon band of all-time but that doesn't make them the greatest.

1) Scab
When I said earlier that I was a fan of Brendon Small's earlier work I was referring to Home Movies. Home Movies featured the best cartoon of band of all-time, Scab. Scab, led by guitarist Dwayne, would perform the music featured in Brendon, Jason and Melissa's movies. How can you deny Scab of being the greatest cartoon band of all-time with beautiful lyrics such as these:

"Don't put marbles in your nose, put them in there, do not put them in there. Don't put marbles in your nose, put them in there, do not put them in there."

Or there is their classic "Don't Kill Children".

"Brendon Small, he didn't do anything wrong. He was riding his bike, they tried to take his life. Don't kill children, don't run them over. Let them live their life, then they'll get older. Don't kill children, don't run them over. Let them live their life, then they'll get older."
