10. "Halloween" (Season 2, Episode 6)
Buffy the Vampire Slayer was not all about killing and darkness. There was always a lighter side to the series and Halloween was one of the episodes that was more fun than darkness. The Scooby Gang is enjoying their Halloween when a curse causes everyone in Sunnydale to turn into what they are dressed as. The super powerful Buffy suddenly becomes a weak and helpless noblewoman while the usually cowardly Xander turns into a brave soldier. Meanwhile, nobody can see Willow because she is a ghost. Good thing this episode was not set in 2010 or they all could be turned into Justin Beibers.
9. "Out of Mind, Out of Sight" (Season 1, Episode 11) and "Earshot" (Season 3, Episode 18)
The early seasons were critically acclaimed because of how flawlessly the vampire gimmick meshed with high school life. "Out of Mind, Out of Sight" and "Earshot" were great early episodes because they both dealt with issues that many high school students encounter. In "Out of Mind, Out of Sight" there are attacks that seem to be occurring from an invisible student. Buffy finds a student that was ignored at school every day until one day she finally just literally disappeared. In "Earshot" Buffy temporarily gains psychic powers and overhears someone planning to kill the student body. When Buffy tracks down a student in the clock tower with a rifle she believes it is him but it turns out he plans to commit suicide because of how lonely he feels due to being unpopular.
8. "Chosen" (Season 7, Episode 22)
Unfortunately by the end of season seven Buffy the Vampire Slayer had become a pretty mediocre program but the last episode was a nice send off to Buffy and the rest of the gang.
7. "The Gift" (Season 5, Episode 22)
Buffy died two or three times throughout the series but the season finale to season five was the most memorable. Buffy sacrifices her self in order to save her friends and the rest of Sunnydale.
6. "School Hard" (Season 2, Episode 3)
Many fans loved the Angel/Buffy relationships but in the early days of Buffy David Boreanaz was not a great actor. The first villain that really held my interest was when Spike made his debut along with Drusilla.
5. "Passion" (Season 2, Episode 17)
Towards the end of season two Angel was finally becoming the great character that deserved a spinoff television series. One of the key moments in the development of Angel is when he kills Jenny Calendar. It is one of the few times in the series when somebody close to Buffy's gang is actually killed.
4. "Tabula Rasa" (Season 6, Episode 8)
Tabula Rasa is another completely silly episode but it one of the funniest moments in the series. Buffy and the gang are all together when suddenly a spell gives them all amnesia and they struggle to figure out who each of them are. Giles and Spike end up believing they are father and son because they both have British accents while Giles and Anya believe they are married because they own the magic shop together.
3. "The Body" (Season 5, Episode 16)
Sarah Michelle Gellar was never thought of as a great actress but "The Body" was one of the bright moments of her acting career. "The Body" isn't about monsters, high school or even dating troubles. "The Body" is about Buffy dealing with the loss of her mother and trying to cope with the idea that she must take care of her sister Dawn while also being the person to protect Sunnydale. All of this she must now do without the person that loved her most.
2. "Once More, With Feeling" (Season 6, Episode 7)
Season 6 was possibly the weakest season of the entire Buffy series but it is because of the lack of a great overall story that allowed for a great standalone episode or two like the musical episode called "Once More, With Feeling". The songs are both poignant but also humorous and the villain, a singing and dancing demon, is actually one of the coolest looking monsters in the entire series.
1. "Hush" (Season 4, Episode 10)
One of the most underrated aspects of acting is the ability to tell a story without moving your mouth. It seems most actors think that acting is 90% what you say. In the episode "Hush" a group of creatures called the Gentlemen steal the voices of everybody in Sunnydale. For most of the episode none of the actors are allowed to speak, instead relying on facial expressions and body language to convey what they are saying and there is never a moment when the audience doesn't understand what is happening.
