10 Best Free Things in Life

There is a song with the words "the best things in life are free". I'm not sure of the original artiste but I'm sure it has been covered by several people. I thought it would be interesting to compile a list of things in life that are free. I have composed my favourite ten in no particular order. Other people may like to comment and compile their own lists. It may make for interesting reading.

I'm a father of three and one of the best experiences I have ever had was the birth of my children. That special feeling and bond when you have contributed to a new life takes some beating. As I said earlier this list is not in any particular order but I'm sure for many people, this would be their number one choice. Some may argue however, that this is not free but I'm not going to haggle over this.

Have you ever got up early morning just to see the Sun come up over a beach or over the mountains? Well I have to admit I have done this and it must be added to my list. Admittedly it is not so good seeing the sun come up over smoke filled industrial chimneys in the many concrete jungles of our world but it is a definite addition to my list. My first experience of this was on holiday in the Canary Islands over 30 years ago and i have never forgotten it.

Have you ever had a hard week at work? I'm sure you have. I think we all have at some point in our lives. Isn't it great when you hear the alarm clock buzzing only to realise it is Saturday and you don`t have to get up for work? What a great feeling when you can just roll over and have another hour.

Now that Christmas is on the horizon it reminds me of another great free feeling and experience. There are two really. One that you experience as a child and one you experience as an adult. For a child Christmas is a magical experience and you can`t beat that early morning feeling when you wake up to all your presents at the bottom of your bed. It doesn't seem like 5 minutes since you eagerly went to bed and tried to stay awake to see if Santa really came or if it was your Dad creeping around in the dark.

As an adult I have always found it magical on Christmas Eve when all the running round has been done and all the children are in bed. It's just fantastic to listen to the absolute quiet outside. There is a stillness in the air that is not apparent at any other time of the year. If you can be lucky enough to see a few snowflakes fall it adds to the magic.

Have you ever been outside in the winter when it is really cold? Whether it is just walking the dog or chopping wood you can't beat that warmth as you open the door especially if there is a roaring fire on the go in the living room. Most people don`t have wood or coal fires now but coming home on a cold day to the central heating is just as good!

One of my favourite freebies is going to bed and being surprised by that freshness of new clean sheets and pillows. It's great if it is cotton and even better if it is silk!

Another favourite freebie of mine is the simple warmth of the Sun on your face as you relax after a long day at work.

Only two more to go now and one of them is again on the theme of newness. I once ws asked what i would do if i was rich. My immediate response was that i would always wear a brand new shirt every day. You just can`t beat that brand new smell and the feel of the material against your skin. Finally my last one is a bit more mundane. You really have to have been working or exercising hard to appreciate this one. Get upstairs, run that bath and soak for hours. Feel the aches and pains evaporate from your muscles. Don't fall asleep though or you will ruin the occasion!

Well thats it, my ten best freebies in life. Of course there are many many more and i will be interested to read other peoples lists. Keep it clean though so not as to cause offence.
