10 Best Places in Texas for Families to Visit While On Vacation

With a total land area of 268,820 square miles, Texas is a vast land of many great cities, sites and attractions. Considering its rich history, it's no surprise that it is chock-full of historic places.

1. The River Walk - San Antonio

San Antonio is famous for its River Walk. Located one floor below street level, the River Walk winds its way through downtown. Visitors enjoy delicious cuisine from a number of different restaurants. There is practically any kind of food to satisfy any palate. They can even sit outside to enjoy their meals while feeding the fish and birds as many of the restaurants have riverside seating.

There are many docking stations that make it easy to catch a riverboat for a guided tour of the area. If, instead a leisurely stroll is the order of the day, visitors can walk around the river and maybe stop off at the mall or at the outdoor riverside theater. The theater features grass and stone seats that are cut into a sloping knoll on one side of the river and a stage that is on the other side. For those interested in Texas history, the Alamo is across the street from the River Walk

2. Lake Whitney State Park - Whitney

Texas is full of state parks that offer wonderful experiences for families on vacation. Among those parks is Lake Whitney State Park. Visitor there can stay for the day or camp out on site. The park features a full range of amenities including, restrooms, showers, water and electric campsites, and a store. Guests in the park can participate in a variety of activities including, hiking, biking, fishing, swimming, and water skiing.

3. Houston, Texas

Though Houston is not an individual attraction, its diversity, architecture, and arts combine to make it a wonderful place for a family to vacation. There is much to do and see in this great city. Between visiting the Houston Zoo, The Children's Museum, The Houston Museum of Natural Science, and the performing arts district downtown, there is plenty for families to enjoy.

4. The Guadalupe River - New Braunfels

Many people find that spending time on the river is a great way to come together as a family. There are several camp sites and accommodations along the river to facilitate those interested in rafting, camping, and fishing. This area is renowned for its Whitewater Rafting.

5. Six Flags Over Texas Theme Park - Arlington

Texas is known for its theme parks, and the Six Flag family of parks is largely responsible for that. Six Flags Over Texas is full of rides to thrill young and old alike. It is also home to some great entertainment including, character meet-and-greets, a "Glow in the Park Parade," concerts, and more.

6. Hurricane Harbor - Arlington

Few things can cool a person off in the heat of a Texas summer, but Hurricane Harbor fills the bill. With over 47 acres of water fun, the park promises to hold something for everyone. The park features an interactive family adventure at "Hook's Lagoon and its "zero gravity" slide called "Mega Wedgie." It is right across the street from Six Flags Over Texas.

7. Fiesta Texas - San Antonio

Nestled in a beautiful canyon setting, Fiesta Texas is a theme park full of fun. Not only does this park feature rides, entertainment, concerts, and themed areas, it has its own water park, "White Water Bay."

8. Dallas Heritage Village at Old City Park - Dallas

Located just south of downtown Dallas, Dallas Heritage Village is nestled in 13 acres of woods. The area consists of 38 historic building that remind visitors what it was like from 1840 to 1910. The area includes Victorian homes, a school, a church, a traditional Jewish household, and a Civil War era farm, among other things.

9. The Dallas World Aquarium - Dallas

Not far from Old City Park in Dallas lies the world's largest freshwater aquarium. The attraction is home to flora and fauna from around the world. Visitors to the site are greeted by different types of birds flying free overhead, doing what birds do - foraging, building nests, and taking care of their young. Among the wonders at the aquarium, there exists a 40 foot waterfall, many mammals, and a rainforest exhibit to excite the mind and educate as well.

10. San Antonio Zoo - San Antonio

This zoo is home to over 3,500 animals representing 600 species of animals on 56 acres. The grounds are beautifully landscaped and add to the overall experience of the place. There are several exhibits, plants, and animals to keep the whole family entertained for hours, but just in case they don't, there is also a train that carries visitor on a miniature track along the edge of the San Antonio River through Generations of Brackenridge park.
