10 Best Video Game Crossovers

Lee Andrew Henderson
Crossovers are hip these days in the video game world. Recently Namco confirmed a Tekken/Street Fighter crossover and there is also a game called Heroes on the Move being released that joins the forces of Sly Cooper, Jax and Daxter and Ratchet and Clank. Both of these games are promising to their fans but it will be tough for either to be considered one of the 10 best video game crossovers.

10) Soul Caliber
The Soul Caliber franchise has never produced a franchise vs. franchise game like MK vs. DC but there have been some nice guest appearances from the likes of Legend of Zelda's Link and Star Wars' Yoda and Darth Vader.

9) Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games
If a video game title starts with the words "Mario & Sonic" then I'm sold. Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games is not the greatest video game ever, no Olympics video game is, but I was a Sega Genesis supporter back in the day so I'll take the opportunity to kick Mario's overall-wearing butt any day.

8) Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe
MK vs. DC was not as successful as that other comic/fighting crossover but it was something new for Mortal Kombat and was the first game in the series that I played in a while. The cutscenes in between each fight were a nice storyline addition that Mortal Kombat games have sorely lacked.

7) WCW vs. the World
WCW vs. the World was one of the earliest Playstation wrestling games and was still one of the best by the end of that generation. For the most part the game starred WCW wrestlers like Sting, Eddy Guerrero and Ric Flair but also featured characters that had made up names but were clearly based on real wrestlers from the around the world.

6) Battletoads & Double Dragon
When my beloved Double Dragon was teamed with Battletoads I thought it was some kind of joke. Not only was the pairing odd but at the time crossovers were a new concept. Battletoads & Double Dragon was liked well enough that it is one of the pioneers of video game crossovers.

5) Lego Star Wars
Most crossovers make sense. Mario and Sonic are natural rivals. Pitting comic book characters against fighting characters is a dream match up. Teaming up Star Wars with Legos though? That was crazy. Crazy awesome. There may never be another game as surprisingly good as the Lego Star Wars games.

4) Fire Pro Wrestling Returns
Despite not having the graphics of a Xbox 360 or Playstation 3 graphics, Fire Pro Wrestling Returns remains the best North American wrestling video game. Fire Pro Wrestling features a huge roster of wrestlers all around the world like Curry Man, Masahiro Chono and Jushin Thunder Liger from New Japan, The Great Muta and Toshiaki Kawada from All Japan, Great Sasuke and Jinsei Shinzaki from Michinoku Pro, and a lot more. The game also allows users to make up to 500 created players.

3) Kingdom Hearts
Kingdom Hearts was another "what the heck" crossover. Final Fantasy and Disney are just two entities that should not work together but the brilliance of Square Enix made Kingdom Hearts one of the best video game franchises.

2) Super Smash Bros. Brawl
The amazing thing about the Smash Brothers games is that it collects a weird assortment of characters like an Italian plumber, an intergalactic fox and a... what the heck is Kirby anyway? The point is that all these characters are completely different and yet the game makes it feasible and realistic for them to be fighting.

1) Marvel vs. Capcom
Marvel vs. Capcom gets the top spot just because of the dream match up potential. Kingdom Hearts and Smash Bros. are equal in quality but there is just no match up more enticing than Capcom's stars fighting Marvel's stars.
