THE WHY
Ask yourself why you want to own a hot tub. Do you need it for intimate soaks? Do you need one for large parties with lots of seats? Need a deep one for exercise routines? Bigger isn't always better. A small model with well placed jets could fit your needs best.
TEST DRIVE
Take a soak in the showroom! Hop right in - get the feel of the size and seat contour. You'll get a feel for the jet positions and water level. Take notice of the exit and entry points. Also, test a tub that isn't filled. A dry run can help you make a decision on the size tub you will need.
COST
Even if you purchase a hot tub that is on sale: the savings could be canceled out by the maintenance cost per month. Insist on documented proof of operating costs.
SIZE MATTERS
Hot tubs can't be folded in half...so measure your allowed space. The tub must be able to fit through your doorway for inside use. The standard doorway is 32 inches wide. Models are available that move up and down stairs easily.
BELLS AND WHISTLES
Add stairs for easy in and out of the hot tub. Underwater lights are a beautiful effect. The panel for jet control and electronic control should be reachable from within the tub. Pull bars for safety are a plus.
MAINTENANCE
Once a month filter changes are a must. You have to drain the water every 3 or 4 months and replace it. Chlorine free sanitizers will help to keep the water clean and clear.
ENERGY AND SAFETY
A well insulated model with a tight fitting lid cover will help to keep the heat in and costs down. Keep the tub covered when not in use for safety reasons. You may want to install an alarm and a lock for added safety.
PUMP IT UP
Hot tubs run on a pump. Use two pumps for duel people usage. Consider one pump that has 2 speeds for different power levels. The noise factor of the pump will help you with this decision as no one like to scream over a loud pump.
INSTALLATION
Specialty stores will install the hot tub for you. This could be included in the price. Be sure to ask. Some big box stores don't install but can recommend installers. Get the installation terms set up beforehand and in writing.
STANDARD FINE PRINT
Ask about the warranty. Does it include parts and labor? What out of pocket costs are you responsible for? Warranties differ so be sure to read the fine print.
Hot tubs are a big ticket purchase. There are 100's of manufactures. Shop with a reputable dealer.
