10 Creepy, Scary, and Entertaining Halloween Songs

Jill P. Viers
I thoroughly enjoy Halloween, including all of the standard, expected, and often cheesy songs that accompany the ghoulish holiday. That being considered, I wanted to share a Halloween song playlist with some song titles and artists that you may not have considered for your listening or party planning pleasure.

"Red Right Hand" by Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds

Even if you don't know the song by name, you will once you hear it. "Red Right Hand" has been in several movies, including "Scream," "Dumb and Dumber," and "Hellboy." It was also in "The X-Files" TV show. It is a creepy, fun, perfect song for Halloween. And for the literature buffs, the song title comes from a line in "Paradise Lost" by John Milton.

"Sweet Dreams" - the Marilyn Manson version

Remember the Eurythmics song? Marilyn Mansion did a much slower, rawer version of the song that's sure to send chills down your spine. Really, most Marilyn Manson songs are perfect for a scary Halloween.

"Pinball Wizard" by The Who

I love the band, and while the song itself isn't creepy, it's from the movie "Tommy." When I was little, I saw only parts of this movie, and I thought it was the freakiest, creepiest, most absurd thing. I am terrified to ever watch the whole movie. So, it makes the most recognizable song from the film a great choice for a fun Halloween song.

"Creep" by Radiohead

The title obviously fits Halloween well, and it is a haunting, yet cool song.

"It's the End of the World as We Know It (And I Feel Fine) by R.E.M.

Songs about death, destruction, and/or the end of the world aren't usually so fast-paced and seemingly upbeat. Exactly why this is a fun song for Halloween.

"Enter Sandman" by Metallica

"Hush little baby, don't say a word, and never mind that noise you heard. It's just a beast under your bed, in your closet, in your head." If you were ever freaked out by the dark, the sandman, the boogeyman, beasts, goblins, anything under your bed or in your closet, this is a perfectly terrifying Halloween song.

"Another Brick in the Wall Part II" by Pink Floyd

A protest song about boarding schools with a creepy dude scolding the students ("If you don't eat your meat, you can't have any pudding. How can you have any pudding if you don't eat your meat?"), plus school children singing part of the song - it's just plain creepy. Somehow, they even made British accents seem creepy in that song.

"Psycho Killer" by Talking Heads

Lyrics written like they were taken out of a serial killer's mind wrapped in a catchy tune. That's disturbing enough for Halloween.

"Down with the Sickness" by Disturbed

Many Disturbed songs are perfectly disturbing for Halloween, but "Down with the Sickness" stands out to me. "It seems what's left of my human side is slowing changing in me" is just one of the lines. David Draiman's wacky vocal abilities for sound effects are great in this song.

"The Cockroach that Ate Cincinnati" by Rose and the Arrangement/Dr. Demento

Hey, this may not be frightening to you, but I live in this city. A giant cockroach eating me would certainly not be cool. This is actually quite a humorous little ditty.

Usage instructions for this playlist: If you scare easily, do not listen alone! Happy Halloween!
