10 Easy and Inexpensive Ways to Make Your Vegetables Taste Better

There's No Need to Eat Bland Ones

Jackie Barlow
If you are like me and find it a "chore" to eat vegetables because they seem to have no taste, here are some ideas that I enjoy:

1. You don't have to add just peas to your tuna casserole!! You can cook up a wide variety of veggies such as peas, beans, squash, broccoli, etc. and then add them to the casserole before it is done cooking in time to blend everything together. The more vegetables you add, the healthier the dish is!! And it is done in one casserole so that you have your complete meal all ready!

2. There are a variety of cheeses. You can melt cheese on top of the veggies when they are cooked and still hot, and the cheese will melt. The variety will give you different tastes to experiment with.

3. For those of you like me who must stay away from salt, Mrs. Dash offers a wide variety of mixtures (all without salt) that give taste. My personal favorite is the Tomato Basil Garlic one.

4. Cook your vegetables in V-8 juice!! That way you get flavor as well as more healthy ingredients.

5. Top with an unusual sauce such as a Thai Sweet Chili Sauce or a Teriyaki Sauce (low sodium, of course)!! That gives a lot of tangy flavor and a very different taste.

6. When you make your spaghetti sauce, in addition to the usual onion, mushrooms, etc. add cut-up squash, eggplant, carrot, green beans, broccoli, cauliflower, etc. This will make a very healthy sauce that cannot only be used on pasta but also is delicious on fish, chicken, and more.

7. Use cream of mushroom soup or any cream soup to give more flavor.

To that you can add diced chicken, tuna, hard boiled egg, etc. and again have a complete meal to serve perhaps over toast or biscuits.

8. Make a vegetable potpie using a prepared refrigerated crust!!

9. Layer your vegetables under your chicken or fish or meat when serving. That way the flavor from the main ingredient will seep into the vegetables and give them extra taste.

10. Use up any leftover vegetables in a big batch of soup!! That will go a long way towards cleaning out your refrigerator and yet not cost you extra money. Look for sales on canned broth and buy extra cans to keep on hand for times like these. How more budget conscious could you get?

These are such creative suggestions. I already add a variety of vegetables when making spag bol (Spaghetti Bolognese) so it was nice to see that mentioned in your article.

Thanks for the tips Jackie! I never would have thought of using V-8 to cook the veggies!
