10 Family Favorite Christmas Movies

Bethany Wenger
One of my family's traditions is watching Christmas Movies; one each night the week leading into Christmas. Here is the list of our top 10 favorite Christmas Movies. Curl up with a bowl of caramel popcorn and enjoy!

Nestor, the Long Eared Christmas Donkey

Filmed in 1977, Nestor the Long Eared Christmas Donkey is our ultimate family favorite Christmas Movie! Set during the Roman Empire, Nestor is tiny donkey that was born with VERY long ears that keep getting him into trouble. After tragedy strikes, Nestor and his cherub guide Tilly set off to find Nestor's destiny.

How the Grinch Stole Christmas

Oh, the Grinch! Christmas is not complete without watching the original 1966 version of this movie. The Grinch does not like Christmas, and makes plans to steal it from all the Whos down in Whoville. The smallest Who in Whoville, Cindy Loo Who saves Christmas for the entire town. Jim Carrey remade this classic in 2000. While it is funny, my younger children find it scary, so we stick with the original.

Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer

Narrated by Sam the Snowman, this is a story of a misfit reindeer just trying to fit in. Rudolph and his misfit friends, Heremy the Elf who wants to be a dentist, and Yukon Cornelius the prospector help the island of misfit toys and save Christmas, thanks to Rudolph's Red Nose of course!

Frosty the Snowman

Based on the popular song of the same name; this movie warms even the coldest hearts at Christmas. A young girl tries to save her friend Frosty the Snowman from a magician who wants Frosty's Hat. They travel together by train, trying to make it to the North Pole before Frosty melts.

Home Alone

Eight-year-old Kevin McAllister is accidentally left home while his family jumps on a plane for Paris. It is up to him to keep burglars Marv and Harry from breaking into his home on Christmas Eve. He booby-traps his house and Marv and Harry never saw it coming! This is a great comedy for younger kids (5 and up), and adults to share!

National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation

Don't let the title fool you; the Griswold family won't be going anywhere this year. Chevy Chase will keep you laughing with his immense amounts of physical humor, visits from the in-laws, plans for a new in-ground pool, and a bonus that isn't what he is thinking it will be. If you are looking for a good laugh, this is the movie for you!

The Santa Clause

Tim Allen, who is hysterical by the way, plays a divorce attorney who accidentally enters a contract to become the next Santa Clause. He doesn't believe it is real, even when all his hair turns white, he can't keep his face shaved, and he put on a whole lot of weight! This is a great movie for the believer in all of us!

The Muppet Christmas Carol

The telling of Charles Dickens's famous tale as only the Muppets can do! The Muppets keep with their funny ways and yet do not overwhelm the story with humor. This movie is a great introduction for little kids into the world Dickens created. A Christmas movie staple in our household!

A Charlie Brown Christmas

Even in 1965 the struggle between commercialism and materialism and the true meaning of Christmas has been in effect. Charlie Brown takes over directing the school's Christmas Pageant in an effort to discover the true meaning of Christmas, which, with the help of his friends, he does!

A Christmas Story

This 1983 movie is a classic! "You're going to shoot your eye out!" is a phrase that every parent can agree with, and every child fears! This is a wonderful tale of what every boy wants for Christmas, what he doesn't want (like pink bunny pajamas!), and the love of your family.
