If you are a talented (or even not-so-talented) poet, try to write your mother a poem. You can type it up and frame it, or if you have good handwriting you can write and illustrate your poem to make it look personal and old-fashioned.
Pick a bouquet of wildflowers if you have any near your house. If you grow flowers in your garden, those will work as well. Tie a pretty ribbon around the bouquet and present your mother with this timeless token of affection.
Cooking your mother a home cooked meal is a great way to show her how much you care. Your mom probably spent many hours slaving over a stove when you were a child so show her your appreciation by making her favorite meal and inviting her over for dinner.
Make your mother a scrapbook or photo album of important people in her life. If you have photos from her childhood, you can tell the story of her life through photos. You could also put pictures of the two of you together. If you have children, I'm sure she would appreciate an album of pictures of her grandchildren.
Another fun idea is to make up coupons for chores and favors that she can redeem whenever she wants. You can make coupons for homemade bread, for a night out together (your treat), for help organizing her garage, or anything else you can think of that she would appreciate.
If the weather is nice, take your mother hiking or to a local park. Even if she can't walk around a lot, the two of you can enjoy nature and spending some quality time together without spending any money.
Framed photos with hand made frames are a great present that your mother will love to show off. Find a photo that will be meaningful for your mother, and make your own frame for it out of ribbons, shells, silk flowers, or any other type of knickknack.
Your mother will love a letter telling her everything you appreciate that she has done for you. Just write her a sincere letter explaining how much everything she has done for you over the years means to you. A letter will cost you virtually nothing, but can mean the world to your mom.
Find local museums, galleries, or monuments that have free admission and have a free day of cultural immersion. Check your local newspapers or the internet to find out which places have free or optional admission.
Go on a picnic to one of your mom's favorite places for the afternoon. You can pack a cooler with the kind of food she made for you when you were younger, or with some of her favorite snacks.
Whatever you decide to do for your mom this mother's day, remember that the best and most meaningful gifts are not necessarily the ones that cost the most. The most important thing is to show your mother how much you love her and how much you appreciate all she has done for you over the years.
