10 Fun Animal Facts: Dogs

When most people think of dogs the first thing that probably comes to mind is the pet they had as a child or the pet they have now. Dogs have been man's best friend for many many years and some believe dogs descended from wolves while other think dogs descended from the Australian Dingo. According to Kids Konnect, "Dogs belong to the canine family, which includes: Coyotes, dogs, foxes, jackals and wolves."

Dogs are more than just pets to some of us, they are also service animals, part of the police force and can find people buried in rubble after earthquakes. According to Thinkquest.org, "More than three hundred breeds of of dogs exist worldwide. About 50 million dogs live in the United States. The American Kennel Club recognizes 148 breeds."

1. The smallest dog is the Chihuahua.

2. The Tallest breed is the Irish Wolfhound, it is about 39 inches tall at the shoulder.

3. Chows have a black tongue.

4. Dogs have 42 permanent teeth.

5. Dalmatian puppies are born pure white and develop spots as they get older.

6. Dogs curl up with their tails covering their noses to keep their noses warm in cold weather.

7. According to Museum Victoria, Two dogs on the Titanic survived: "Henry Harper and his wife Myra boarded and Titanic in Cherbourg, France, with their Pekinese, Sun Yat, Sen. Henry was famous in the United States of America for his company, Harper Publishing. Henry, his wife Myra and their dog survived" and "Margaret Hayes traveled with her Pomeranian, also boarding in Cherbourg. She and her Pomeranian survived in lifeboat 7".

8. The "spring" in Springer Spaniel refers to the dog's ability to spring or startle game while hunting.

9. Dogs sweat through the pads in their feet.

10. Gidget is the name of the Taco bell dog and is female.

    The picture with this article is of my mom's Lhasa Apso. She is so small but a great companion for my mom.

    My favorite dog by far is the Toy Chihuahua. That being said, they are so delicate, I hate to see them being bred. It's already tough enough for a full-size dog to survive.
