10 Fun Things to Do on Your First Wedding Anniversary

Tim Searles
You have made it through 365 consecutive days of marriage and you still love each other. Hopefully you're experiencing the same thrills you did the day you were married. You and your spouse want to do something special for the first wedding anniversary but you're not quite sure what to plan. Usually the milestone anniversaries are 5 years, 10 years, 20 years, 25 years, 50 years, 75 years... but no one has a gem or a metal symbolizing the first year of marriage.

Here are some ideas on things you can do to celebrate one year of marriage:

Wedding Anniversary Celebration Idea #1: Go to a nearby theme park

One of the advantages of living in a big city is access to establishments like theme parks. Not everyone lives in Florida or California with access to a Disney theme park, but perhaps you're near a Great America, or something more local. Take a day and be a child again. More than likely after being married only a year you don't have a child to care for yet. Take advantage of the youth of your marriage and get on roller coasters, eat cotton candy, walk around and talk about your first year together.

Wedding Anniversary Celebration Idea #2: Try a New Restaurant

Go online and do some research to see what place may interest you and your spouse. You could also take the opposite approach and just drive somewhere until you see something that strikes you. Whatever route you should it promises to generate memories - good or bad. Hopefully you get a good meal out of it at least.

Wedding Anniversary Celebration Idea #3: A game of truth-or-dare

Do you really want to see how well you did in your first year? Make up your own game with your own questions and dares and see how well your spouse will do. It's a great conversation generator and I'm sure there will be that one question that will interrupt the game for an hour or two.

Wedding Anniversary Celebration Idea #4: All-Day Movie Date

Whether renting movies, watching movies previously purchased, or going out to a theater(s) to catch up on recent releases... movies are a great way to be close and enjoy each other's company. If you do go out, I'd recommend eating outside of the theater so you're not snacking all day.

Wedding Anniversary Celebration Idea #5: Camping

For the outdoor enthusiasts, perhaps camping will serve as an interesting wedding anniversary outing. Pack a tent, some chocolate, marshmallows, and graham crackers and head out to the wilderness. Maybe roughing it for the first anniversary will be just what the marriage doctor ordered.

Wedding Anniversary Celebration Idea #6: Painting

Do something creative together. Purchase a canvas for two, some paint, some brushes and paint something together. It doesn't even have to be the same thing, but both people work separate sides of the painting and see what you come up with together. You may come up with a joint masterpiece that can go over your mantle, or on eBay for a profit.

Wedding Anniversary Celebration Idea #7: Stay in Bed All Day

I don't have to tell you some of the things you can do in bed all day, but spend your first anniversary reliving your wedding birthday. Find a hotel room you can stay at for the night in your local city and relive some the great moments of the honeymoon - sex, in-room movies, and room service, for example.

Wedding Anniversary Celebration Idea #8: Take a Class Together

Maybe one or both of you could use a few pointers in the kitchen. Have fun and take a cooking class together and use your new skills over dinner on your anniversary. There are other classes you could take together that won't make you hungry - pottery, martial arts, other crafts, are just a few things that come to mind.

Wedding Anniversary Celebration Idea #9: Train Ride to Neighboring City or Suburb

Start early in the morning and ride the local train to a nearby suburb and enjoy the highlights of the countryside. I would recommend doing some research to find places where you can spend a few hours of your time during the day. If your anniversary falls on a weekday, perhaps you can do this on the weekend before or after your anniversary.

Wedding Anniversary Celebration Idea #10: Be spontaneous

If all else fails, when you both wake up, figure out what you'll do in the moment. You may find that "in the moment" you aren't doing anything at all, and that's okay too. You may lounge around the house, or do normal errands and just do them together.

Camping might be a real voyage of discovery, but I think No. 7 is your best bet. Find a nice hotel.
