10 Gadgets You Can Not Leave the Country Without

Tech Gadgets You Must Have when Traveling Internationally

RH
As Americans, we have become accustomed to many things and there are a lot of things that we take for granted when we travel. There are also a lot of cultural differences encountered when travelling that we must keep in mind, but no matter what country you are going to, there are a few things that you will need to take with you. Many of these are common devices that you take for granted, but it is not as much fun when you go without them. There are many different barriers to doing business overseas, and language is the biggest. While most countries have a large amount of retailers and businesses that do speak English, many of these are not very fluent in the language and confusion can ruin a great deal or a fun time. Here is a look at some of the things that you should take along for the ride so that your trip is not only more enjoyable, but a little cheaper and productive.

Calculator

Whether you are traveling for business or pleasure, one thing that many people forget is a calculator. No matter where you are going, this little device can save you time, headache, and money. All countries read numbers the same way. If you are buying anything, from snacks to home furnishing, a calculator can really save you some time and hassle. You can easily point to what you want and then point to the calculator to ask the person how much something costs. If the price is not right, wave your hand and type in what you want to pay. You can barter for anything, anywhere, without even saying a word.

Power Adapter

One thing that you will need to take is a power adapter. The outlets in other countries vary by region. The above site has you covered no matter where you travel. There are several others that are cheaper, but this site provides a good visual guide to what you may need. The region you are traveling to will have a different adapter. The sockets in England are different from Australia, which is different from Asia, which is different from Europe, etc. There are some travel stores that sell a nifty little all-in-one adapter kit that will have you covered, no matter where you roam. For the constant traveler, these are the best deal. They will save you a lot of headache. If you wait until you are there to pick one up, you will be paying a lot.

Pocket Translator

Like I mentioned before, language is the biggest barrier to foreign travel. Pocket translators are the best for this. You will want to learn a basic grasp of the local language before you head out, but many of us do not have the time to learn everything. That is where these little helpers come in. There are all different types out there now. There are several that can even record what someone says and then display what they said to you in English. You can also do the reverse. The site above has some top of the line versions and not all of them are expensive. These will save you a lot of time and embarrassment as well. You will definitely be seen as a tourist if you take that bulky translation dictionary everywhere.

Atomic Clock

An atomic clock may sound like some sort of doomsday device, or even something from a Star Trek episode, but it is very simple. There are several watches that have this capability built into them, and just about every cell phone works the same as well. All it means is that it has a direct link to a satellite, or cell tower in the case of the phone, and it will update the time changes as you pass through the different time zones. This will save you a lot of time and confusion. The international date line can be a huge headache for many travelers. An atomic clock can save you from ever having to worry about what zone you are in, or whether you have to go up or back an hour or even loose a day. These will really help you wherever you go.

Currency Converter

Currency converters are a good tool, but you need one that is up to the minute. The currency exchange rate can change hourly at times and you will want a converter that is able to keep tabs on the current rates. There are several of these on the market that have a wireless internet connection and can let you know the exact rate at the exact moment you need it. This can really be helpful when purchasing something. There are also a lot of people that will be more than happy to exchange your money for you. Do not trust the shady guy on the corner to give you a good rate. He is trying to make money off of you and will greatly under-exaggerate the exchange rates. Even notable companies overseas have been known to take tourists for a little more than current rate. If they think they can get by with it, you will lose money in the exchange. This is why this little guy is so important. It also helps when getting money. There was one time I was in Italy with a guy and he did not know the rate. He used the ATM and just selected the largest amount to make sure he had enough. Two years later, he was still trying to get rid of that Italian money.

Laptop

Your laptop can be an invaluable tool. You can keep tabs on all sorts of things on the internet and get as many maps as you need. There are countless benefits to taking this with you. You will want to keep it with you at all times though. Do not leave it anywhere. If you do, you may be in the market for a new laptop right away.

WI-FI Adapter

This is a definite must have if you are taking your laptop. There are a lot of places around the globe that do not have internet access. You may have to provide your own wireless connection. There are several different providers and adapters out there for the traveling type. You will want to make sure that it can roam to the area where you will be traveling. Most of these adapters can function around the world, but some will have extra fees, and there are a couple that just will not work. You want to double check that it will work in the country you are headed to. Do not take the salesman's word for it either. You may want to find a forum from the country you are going to and ask if that particular cell phone provider works in that country. This will give you a little reassurance.

Entertainment

For the seasoned traveler, this is a must. Whether it be music, movies, or a hand held game, you need something to keep you occupied on the long trip and in the hotel room. The television will likely only have one or two English channels, aside from CNN, so you will want to take your own movies and games with you. If you are traveling with children, you will need plenty of entertainment. Many of the channels are inappropriate and they may get bored easy. A couple games and a movie or two should do just fine for a short trip.

Rechargeable Batteries

With all of these devices, you will need the batteries to power them. Instead of wasting hundreds of dollars on batteries to take with you, pick up some rechargeable ones and the charger to go with them. You may have a hard time finding the right batteries in the other countries. It depends on the device. Some countries do not carry the same battery sizes as we do, just like the outlet thing. Power sources differ from here to there. If you have enough batteries for each device to have a spare set, you should be fine. That way, you can use the one set while the spare recharges. The Battery Depot has a very wide variety of batteries for any device and they are offering a good deal on shipping right now.

Cell Phone

Many people will tell you not to take your phone with you since it can be lost, stolen, or may not even give you service. I would advise you to take it along anyways. Not only will it give you several of the above tools all in one little device, but it can help you in an emergency. No matter where you are, you can always dial 911 for emergency services on your phone. Different countries have different methods of doing this and it will cut down on the confusion. It can also act as a homing device if something should go wrong. Authorities can track a cell signal very easily now. If you should need help, a cell phone is a nice thing to have. You can also set it up to make calling card calls from out of the country, and many providers will temporarily upgrade you to an international roaming package during your trip so you can still access the mobile web, use maps, or even call home to check in.

These are just a few of the basic things that you will want to take with you on a long international trip. There may be more things that you will want to take along. Each of us has our own needs and preferences. These devices will just help you to have a better and more enjoyable time, no matter where your plans may take you. Like they say in the Navy; "We wish you fair winds and following seas."
