Punctuality
The professional working world is not like university or other settings, where being late is no problem or even construed into being "fashionably late." At a job, timing can be critical, and even one instance of tardiness can raise eyebrows around the water cooler; more than once, and your supervisor may get involved.
Professionalism
There are definitely some differences in mindset between protocol that happens on an interpersonal level, and the etiquette and behaviors required of a workplace setting. This includes standards on written message formats, dress code, company hierarchy, and policies and procedures that differ from entity to entity. Mastering the fine art of professionalism in every setting at every moment can set a person apart from the others.
Positive Attitude
Whatever resources or time is available, one key component to overcoming adversity is a positive attitude; that is, the hope necessary to try the risks required to get out of a slump, or simply to continue chugging along on a tough project. Conversely, when times are booming, it is appropriate to be glad and grateful, rather than still remaining pessimistically dour and downtrodden.
Individuality
Especially in a bigger company where you can just feel like another animal on the cubicle farm, it can be important to set yourself apart. This may mean coming up with original ideas, contributing in a uniquely valuable manner, obtaining specialized training and certifications, or even just conducting yourself in a quirky enough manner that makes you more lovable than loser. Making your name known can also be integral when it comes to composing resumes and shopping for positions elsewhere.
Diligence
Some people have it, and some people do not, when it comes to the capacity to simply get the job done and finish the project. Due diligence is a necessary part of any great team member, and ensures that assigned jobs get done in a timely, effective manner.
Time Management
Often, a position will require an employee to juggle many different tasks with many different deadlines and skill sets. It can be a significant challenge to be responsible in managing how those goals are met and when. Learning how to best manage the day-to-day "little" things, along with the looming launches, is a key asset for any set of soft skills.
Organization
Contributing to efficiency, making sure items are not lost, and enabling someone to tackle tasks in an orderly fashion are a few of the advantages offered when organization is made into a priority. It can apply to digital or paper files and documents, to office equipment and supplies, or even just how a to-do list is assembled and data is gathered.
Energy
Every individual is different when it comes to their energy level. This can be notable in the workplace, where some workers peak at a different part of the day, yet many are not aware of their own rhythm. Some experiment with regiments of coffee and other supplements without making the intentional effort to see if maybe what they really need is an extra hour of sleep at night. Whatever the case may be, work goes much smoother when the worker feels refreshed, confident, relaxed, and ready, rather than anxious, stress, exhausted, and needing a nap.
Communication
Even in the ever-changing strictures of communication, learning how to properly and powerfully convey the intended message still remains among the foremost skills needed in a rather wide variety of jobs and settings. A poor communicator will not even be able to form healthy workplace relationships, while an excellent communicator may discover profound benefits in his or her results.
Creativity
Even for analytical minds, even in positions where there does not seem to be any opportunity for it, it is a valuable exercise for the mind to demonstrate creativity. It can be as simple as putting a clever comic on the wall of your office, or tweaking a process to make it better for everyone. Even if the worker is not specifically an artist or writer, for example, you may be surprised to realize just how many ways you can express creativity, when you consider all your tasks and how they can be twisted just a little bit.
Those are ten good work habits to develop, for a vast array of fields for the majority of workers out there. Out of all the hundreds of little traits to work on and make a habit, this is a solid selection to begin with.
