10 Gore-less Halloween Movies: Clue, E.T. and More

Sherry Dedman
If you're like me, you love to get into a fun Halloween mood this time of year. Movies are a great way to do that. And if you don't like too much gore or over-the-top creepiness, I've got just the list for you!

Here is a list of 10 fun Halloween movies, plus a bonus I threw in just because I like it!

Clue (1985, Rated PG): Based on the mystery game called "Clue," this movie is set in a creepy castle on a very gloomy night! The characters are the usual Ms. Scarlet, Colonel Mustard, etc. With a butler, cook and host thrown in as well. All of the characters are invited to a dinner at this creepy castle under very mysterious circumstances. They unravel the mystery of this dinner, along with why bodies keep piling up all night long, as the evening progresses. This is definitely in the funny/silly category of Halloween movies, while definitely setting the mood. Stars: Tim Curry, Lesley Ann Warren, Michael McKean, Madeline Kahn and more.

The Addams Family (1991, Rated PG-13): Based on the television series of the same name. A very funny, creepy-feeling movie about the Addams' and all of their little quirks. Marvelous scenes in underground tunnels, cemeteries and secret passageway make it eerie and fun. Great dialog and situations make an enjoyable watch and very fun. Stars: Anjelica Huston, Raul Julia, Christopher Lloyd, Christina Ricci and more.

The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975, Rated R): A musical about that age old story where your car breaks down and you find yourself lost in the middle of nowhere with no help in sight except for a spooky castle! Inside, of course, you find transvestites and goths partying because of the creation of a fully grown man in a laboratory. Based loosely on the Frankenstein story of old. Stars: Tim Curry, Susan Sarandon, Barry Bostwick, Richard O'Brien

Young Frankenstein (1974, Rated PG): More fun with Frankenstein. This time the lead character is the grandson of the original Dr. Frankenstein. Shot in black and white, this is a spoof of the Frankenstein story with all the jokes you'd expect from a Mel Brooks movie. Great cast and great comedy here. Stars: Gene Wilder, Peter Boyle, Marty Feldman, Madeline Kahn, Cloris Leachman, Teri Garr and more.

So I Married an Axe Murderer (1993, Rated PG-13): This movie is scary in the "anyone you know can suddenly go psycho on you" kind of way. It's also a bit of a warning about being too paranoid and listening to your instincts. Definitely funny, not too scary - just kind of scary. Stars: Mike Myers, Nancy Travis, Anthony LaPaglia, Amanda Plummer and more.

Beetlejuice (1988, Rated PG): A young couple buys their first home but soon dies in a car accident. They don't realize this right away and return home to find things are not what they seem. Another couple, with a teenage goth girl, moves into the house and the ghost couple feel their style is definitely cramped. They attempt to haunt the house to get rid of the new couple, but they don't succeed in being very scary. This is where Beetle Juice comes into play. Spooky and different, but definitely funny. Fun to see very young versions of Alec Baldwin, Geena Davis and Winona Ryder. Stars: Alec Baldwin, Geena Davis, Winona Ryder and more.

Ghostbusters (1984, Rated PG): It's a dirty job to get rid of all the ghosts, ghouls and goblins in New York City, but someone has to do it. This team of ghost busters has all the equipment and know-how; they are real "ghost geeks" if you will. When one victim of ghosts and ghouls is possessed, it marks the beginning of the end of New York City, unless the Ghostbusters can save it first. The jokes and "the scary" are neck in neck in this feature. Stars: Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Sigourney Weaver, Harold Ramis, Rick Moranis and more.

E.T. (1982, Rated PG): A story of an alien (E.T.) that takes place during the time around Halloween. More mush than fright, this film still delivers the film you're looking for. And there are definitely some funny moments. Stars: Henry Thomas, Dee Wallace, Robert MacNaughton, Drew Barrymore, Peter Coyote and more.

Wallace & Gromit, The Curse Of The Were-Rabbit (2005, Rated G): Wallace & Gromit are their down home, techno-savvy selves in this "monster" movie. Complete with brain transference, scary lab scenes and a "beast" this is a fun one you can watch with children, believe it or not. Animated feature based on characters by Nick Park. Written by Nick Park, Bob Baker, Steve Box and Mark Burton Stars: Peter Sallis, Ralph Fiennes, Helena Bonham Carter and more.

It's The Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown (1966, Unrated): Technically this was a television special and not a movie, but I just couldn't leave it off this list. If nothing else puts you in the crisp, autumn, spooky, fun, Halloween mood, here is the one which will do it for sure. Written by Charles M. Schulz and stars the voices of Peter Robbins, Christopher Shea, Sally Dryer, Kathy Steinberg and more.

BONUS: The 'Bad Blood' episode of The X-Files (1998, Rated TV-14): This is a "bonus" because it is not technically a movie. It is available on television and DVD, though, and definitely falls into the "fun scary" range. It's an episode that has Mulder and Scully tracking vampires (or are they) to a small Texas town. It's a great episode because we get to see the turn of events from each unique viewpoint of the two main characters, and because it is so funny and well-written. Luke Wilson does a great job of playing the sheriff in the small town (both versions of him) and nearly steals the show. Elements include swamps, cemeteries, vampire lore and a chase through scary woods at night! Stars: David Duchovny, Gillian Anderson, Luke Wilson and more.
