Hotel For Dogs
"Hotel For Dogs" is a wonderful movie from 2009 about a couple of foster kids who find themselves a stray dog. Their one dog multiplies when they start saving strays from the pound, so they find an old hotel and turn it into the "Hotel For Dogs." Some other local kids help out. But when they get caught what will happen to these foster kids and all of the wonderful furry friends they have saved? It has a happy ending that brings tears to my eyes every time I watch it. "Hotel For Dogs" stars Emma Roberts and Don Cheadle.
Where The Red Fern Grows
"Where The Red Fern Grows" is one of my favorite books from childhood and the movie brings the story from those pages to life. This 1974 film is about a young boy who works for two years to save up money for two coonhound puppies. He names then Old Dan and Little Ann. The movie will steal your heart.
The Ugly Dachshund
"The Ugly Dachshund" is a wonderful Disney film about a Great Dane named Brutus who thinks he is a dachshund. Why? Because he grew up with a family of them, of course. What makes this such a funny film is all of the trouble that Brutus gets into, thinking that he is the small dog that he isn't. This 1966 movie is definitely an oldie, but a goodie.
Old Yeller
"Old Yeller" is another great oldie from 1957. This too is a Disney film. If you cry easily you may not want to watch this one. Old Yeller is the family dog, but he ends up getting rabies. We have vaccines for that now, but years ago they didn't and if your dog got it there was only one thing to do. In "Old Yeller" it ends up being his teenage owner who has to put this fluffy family dog down. Heartbreaking.
The Doberman Gang
"The Dobermans Gang" is a 1972 film about a crook who trains doberman pinschers to do his dirty work for him. Who ever thought of using dogs to rob a bank? This fun and crazy film had two spin-offs, one of them, "The Amazing Dobermans," starred Fed Astaire (1976).
Marley & Me
"Marley & Me" starts out as a funny movie about a couple and their crazy yellow lab. You will begin the movie in laughter and end it in tears. The dogs in our lives can not stay with us forever, and this movie is a story about Marley's entire life. This 2008 movie is based on a real life dog and stars Owen Wilson and Jennifer Aniston.
Homeward Bound: The Incredible Journey
"Homeward Bound" is a terrific movie from 1993 about 2 dogs and a cat that lose their family and take a dangerous trek to find them. It stars a Himalayan cat, a Golden Retriever and an American Bulldog. These animals are respectively voiced by Sally Field, Don Ameche and Michael J. Fox.
Cujo
"Cujo" is based on a book by Stephen King. This fright fest stars a 200 pound St. Bernard who contracts rabies and goes on a killing spree. With blood, guts and an edge-of- your-seat story, this 1983 movie is definitely not recommended for children or those with weak stomachs.
Fluke
"Fluke" is a 1995 movie based on a book by James Herbert. In the movie a puppy starts to have dreams that lead him to believe he was once a man. The book definitely goes deeper into what happened the man who died and came back as a dog. This interesting flick stars Matthew Modine as the reincarnated one.
Man's Best Friend
"Man's Best Friend" is a 1993 movie about a genetically altered, intelligent dog, that is rescued form a lab by a women, played by Ally Sheedy. The dog grows fond of Sheedy, but he is not entirely stable. MAX, the dog, is a killer and the Doctor from the research facility wants him back. Also stars Lance Henriksen.
