Are you planning a kitchen remodel for sometime during 2012? Whether your plans include a complete overhaul, or just a small facelift, there are lots of great ideas available to you. Here are 10 of the top kitchen updates for 2012.
1. Add an island. If space allows, consider adding an island to your kitchen. They are great for extra storage, counter space and even for added seating. If there isn't quite enough space, consider a mobile island for food prep that can be tucked into the corner after dinner.
2. Introduce art to functionality. Your kitchen doesn't have to look like every other kitchen on the block. Who says your range hood needs to be boring? Look into getting a glass hood, or even a custom wood one.
3. Get frosted glass doors. Maybe you cannot keep the dishes organized inside the cabinets. That doesn't mean you cannot have glass cabinet doors. Simply choose a frosted glass rather than translucent.
4. Mix countertop materials. You can get a designer look in your kitchen by mixing up the countertop materials. Do you love the look of natural stone, but can't afford it for the entire kitchen? Choose laminate for the perimeter and a slab of granite for the island.
5. Tile a backsplash. You can give the room a whole new look with your favorite tile. Glass, ceramic, slate: Cover the wall behind your sink or range with any kind of tile for a completely custom look.
6. Incorporate color. It's nothing to be afraid of. There are many ways you can incorporate color into your kitchen without the fear that it will go out of style. Paint an accent wall; if you don't like it, paint over it. Choose colorful accessories. Hang colorful artwork on the walls.
7. Re-organize cabinetry. Rather than gutting the entire thing and starting over, why not rearrange the layout a little bit. Take some out, add some in...but remember, only make changes that will improve the existing layout.
8. Install new appliances. They alone can give your kitchen a whole new look. Stainless steel is still in, with black appliances coming in second place. And energy-efficient appliances will always be trendy.
9. Color-coordinate the cabinetry. You don't have to choose just one color for your cabinets. Mix it up with one color for the uppers and another for the base cabinets--whether you are going with colorful paint or mixing up the stain colors.
10. Build in the appliances. Your microwave doesn't have to take up valuable counter space. Build it into the upper or lower cabinets. The same goes for a wine fridge, ice maker, coffee center and any other small appliances you might have.
