10 Great Songs by Neil Young

Neil Young has been recording music since the 1960's. An eclectic artist, born in Canada, his influence has inspired many, and his fame has allowed him to record music in many different styles.

Here are just 10 songs (out of hundreds) in his early career as a music artist, that are a must listen for any music fan.

1. Mr. Soul - Recorded with the Buffalo Springfield band, featuring Stephen Stills. Written by Neil Young and featured on the album, The Best of Buffalo Springfield, Retrospective
verse: "...any girl in the world could have easily known me better..."

2. On The Way Home - Another classic from the Retrospective album. Written by Neil, originally sung by band mate, Ritchie Furay. My favorite version is from the Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young album, Four Way Street.
verse: "...I went insane like a smoke ring day when the wind blows..."

3 The Loner - From Neil's first solo album, Neil Young. Features former Buffalo Springfield member, Jim Messina (of Loggins and Messina fame) on bass. Recorded by Stephen Stills for his album, Illegal Stills.
verse: "...he's a perfect stranger, a cross between himself and a fox..."

4. Cinnamon Girl - From Neil's second solo album, Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere. An electric song with feedback. Played on classic rock stations worldwide.
verse: "...I wanna live with the cinnamon girl, I could be happy the rest of my life with the cinnamon girl..."

5. Cowgirl In The Sand - From Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere. Another classic featuring acoustic and electric guitar solos.
verse: "...it's the woman in you that makes you want to play this game..."

6. Helpless - From Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young, Deja Vu. Also featured on The Band's, The Last Waltz album with Joni Mitchell singing background vocals.
verse: "..and in my mind, I still need a place to go, all my changes were there..."

7. Country Girl - From the CSNY album, Deja Vu. A trilogy of three songs, "Whiskey Boot Hill"," Down Down Down", and "Country Girl (I Think You're Pretty)", joined together to form one.
verse: "...got no lovers in the city, let me be your country man..."

8. Tell Me Why - From the album, After The Gold Rush. The first song on the album, sets the tone for this classic rock must have album. One of my favorite albums of all time.
verse: "..is it hard to make arrangements with yourself, when you're old enough to repay, but young enough to sell..."

9. After The Gold Rush - Title song from album. Features Stephen Stills on backing vocals.
verse: "...there was a band playing, in my head and I felt like getting high..."

10. Only Love Can Break Your Heart - From After The Gold Rush. Neil's first Top 40 song, peaked at #33 on the charts in 1970.
verse: "...I have a friend I've never seen, he hides his head inside a dream..."
