3) Cafe Wha: A small doorway on a busy West Village street leads you down into Cafe Whaunderground den of live music. Though the bands aren't ones that you are likely to see on the cover of Rolling Stone magazine anytime soon, they are very talented. The varied groups change out its singers and can play anything from Fleetwood Mac to Bonnie Tyler to Bob Marley. As house bands go, they are a cut above and the energy definitely picks up when they start playing. The staff is friendly and as attentive as they can be in such a busy place. If you can handle the cozy surroundings, you'll probably have a great time here. Stop by on Wednesday or Sunday, when there is no cover, and get there before 10 to get the best seats. It is a favorite spot for men to propose to their gals, and is also popular with the over-50 crowd. The signature dish is beef Wellington, featuring filet mignon surrounded by pastry dough (not surprisingly, quite a few heart attacks have reportedly taken place here over the years). 7) Curry in A Hurry: If you are pressed for time and desire Indian food for a change instead of a burger or deli dishes, Curry in a Hurry is the place for you. All the standard dishes are reasonably priced. It is also a great place to go with your children to introduce them to such delicacies as samosas and tandoori chicken. The decor is no more inspiring than a school cafeteria, but Indian movies and videos are shown, and you can look out of the window to enjoy the sights and sounds of the neighborhood while you tuck in.

8) Katz's Deli: Around for more than 100 years, this huge cafeteria-style Jewish deli may not be the place to take a date-formica tables lined up in rows will remind him or her of eating in a school lunchroom.
