10 Greatest Video Games Released in 2009

Jennifer Amlie
With no shortage of games, 2009 was a great year to be a gamer. Picking just ten video games to highlight from the year was a challenge with so many to choose from. This is my list of the 10 best video games released in 2009.

10. Best video game of 2009: F.E.A.R. 2 Project Origin
While it may not make every "best games" list, I really enjoyed this creepy sequel to 2006's FPS. More about the mystery of Alma is explored as you battle your way through ATC operatives. It's a solid shooter, but leaves you wanting more. The new online multiplayer is good, but the overall story could have been more engaging.

9. Best video game of 2009: MadWorld
Despite its lackluster sales, MadWorld, is a unique M-rated game for the Wii. The interesting graphics have a Sin City look. The game play is varied and fun. It's over the top violence might have stirred controversy, but it's entertaining for adult fans of the Wii.

8. Best video game of 2009: Resident Evil 5
While longtime fans of the series may lament the focus on action, RE5 is still a great game that has its creepy moments. The new split screen two player mode is a plus, as is the online play. RE5 is a solid mix of what made the older titles great and innovation.

7. Best video game of 2009: New Super Mario Bros Wii
Super Mario gets a multiplayer make-over with up to four people able to play at once. This side scrolling platformer is one that adults and kids can enjoy together. It also features a new "Super Guide" which helps if you get stuck in the game.

6. Best video game of 2009: Batman Arkham Asylum
This is the game Batman fans have been waiting for. Mixing fighting and action with detective works makes for an interesting, varied experience. The game follows a linear path that also allows for exploration. The voice acting is top notch and the graphics are stunning.

5. Best video game of 2009: Halo ODST
ODST focuses on a rookie, not the mighty Master Chef. This is the first Halo game that lets the player choose the order in which campaign levels are played. Campaign mode can be played with up to four players. This game also comes with the complete Halo 3 multiplayer maps. A new mode called Firefight features waves of enemies of increasing difficulty.

4. Best video game 2009: Uncharted 2 Among Thieves
This sequel to 2007's action/adventure hit takes place two years after the events of the first game. Playing as Nathan Drake, the story focuses on Marco Polo's doomed journey home. The graphics are beautiful and game play is smooth. There is also competitive and co-op multiplayer modes.

3. Best video game of 2009: Borderlands
Expertly combining the best of RGPs and FPSs, Borderlands is just plain fun. Along with a colorful cast of friends and foes, your character searches for the elusive Vault. It's exciting, varied game whether played alone or with others. The selection of weapons is amazing, as is the choice of missions. The cel-shaded graphics stand out and help make the game a unique experience.

2. Best video game of 2009: Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2
Modern Warfare 2 will make "game of the year" lists everywhere. It sold over 4 million copies in the first day of release. The campaign has been criticized for being short, but the multiplayer's depth more than makes up for it.

1.Best video game of 2009: Left 4Dead 2
The follow up to last year's hit offers more zombies, more weapons, and more modes of play. Fast paced and intense, Left 4 Dead 2 has enormous replay value. It's never the same play through twice, thanks to the superb AI. It's scary, fun, and a great multiplayer game. Left 4 Dead was an excellent game, but L4L2 blows it out of the water.

The list doesn't cover every great game released in 2009, but I feel these ten video games are the best. Whether the game is an excellent sequel, new title or just a different experience, these games are not to be missed.

Interesting choices-greatest lists are always subjective to the criteria-I probably wouldn't pick most of these games but I'm a different generation with children in a different age range from you

You know, Jen, I just never got into games. I have friends and family that are totally into them - I suppose it's an outlet like anything else and to each his/her own. Thorough write up (I pass these to my nephew to read - he's a gamer!) Cheers.
