10 Hair Care Tips for the Winter Months
Hair Care Made Simple and Easy in the Winter with These 10 Tips
Completely dry hair before going out. Wet hair outside is a winter hair care no-no; wet hair is most vulnerable when wet so the last thing you want to do is go outside when it even damp. Hair can freeze and break. Winter is very tough on the hair as it is, so don't make it harder for your hair by leaving it wet and going outside.
Use a leave in moisturizer. My winter hair care regimen includes using a leave in moisturizer; however I do not use it in the summer or warmer months. A product that I personally really like is called Goldwell Moisture Definition leave in serum. The product claims it provides intensive instant care for dry and damaged hair but I love the way my hair feels so soft, shiny and moisturized when I use it. It is also reasonably priced for about $6.50 for a 0.6 oz bottle.
Wear a hat. One of the easiest and best hair care tips to follow is to make sure to wear a hat, scarf or hood on your head so that the hair is protected from the damaging cold and dry winter air. When wearing any type of head gear, you will want to make sure that it is not too tight on the head as the constriction can break and damage hair also.
Use mayonnaise. For home remedy hair care tips, I always look to the refrigerator and take out a jar of mayonnaise. Rub mayonnaise in your hair, wrap your head with a plastic wrap and allow it to penetrate for a few hours. If you are able to tolerate leaving the mayonnaise in your hair all night while sleeping, that is a great way to give your hair a deep condition. In the morning, wash and style your hair as usual. The mayonnaise helps with shine and because it is a form of a conditioner; it will also help with dryness and frizz.
Drink water. We sometimes forget that our outside health comes from the inside body health and drinking lots of water is part of maintaining good healthy functions. Yes, drinking water helps to give you healthy hair.
Get regular hair trims. Getting those regular hair trims helps to get rid of split ends and when you do not have split ends, your hair looks and feels healthier; plus it has a smoother appearance. Hair trims are very important year round but for winter hair care, make sure to put hair trims at the top of your list.
Use daily rinse out conditioner.A daily conditioner should really be used year round to maintain healthy hair but especially for optimum winter hair care, it is essential to use a daily conditioner after you wash your hair. Daily conditioner helps minimize dryness, static hair and frizz.
Don't shampoo everyday. This may or may not be something that you can do but if you are able to tolerate shampooing every other day, it is a great way to let the natural oils in your scalp coat the hair shaft a bit and the natural oils make for healthy hair. The natural oils also help alleviate some of the dryness and static that causes hair care to be so difficult in the winter.
Cut down on blow drying and curling. Any of the appliances that put out a lot of heat on your hair can be damaging. Your hair is having a hard enough time trying to deal with winter dryness and cold. Add the factor of very hot producing hair appliances does not make it any easy to keep your healthy hair. One of the best hair care tips I was given by a hairdresser years ago was to try and cut back on blow drying and curling if it all possible; it was difficult at first but I decided to cut back and just blow dry my hair every other day and it made a huge difference in the condition of my hair, especially in the winter time.
Keep long hair up. Hair care in the winter can be especially tricky for those with long hair. If you have longer type hair and are comfortable with this, try keeping your hair in a pony tail, bun or clip. While pulling hair up does cause some stress on the hair, the winter elements can be worse and sometimes the static in hair is enough to drive a person crazy.
Make sure to maintain a routine with winter hair care by following simple tips you will be happy with the results and will enjoy the beautiful, healthy hair you have.
