10 Highest Grossing Pirate Films of All-Time

Lee Andrew Henderson
Ever since I saw Peter Pan as a young boy I've had a fascination with pirates. When done correctly a pirate can make for one of the fiercest type of bad guys while also being charismatic enough that you actually root for them. Over the years there have been many movies featuring pirates and these are the 10 that have grossed the most at the box office.

10 Highest Grossing Pirate Films: Sinbad: Legend of the Seven Seas
Legend of the Seven Seas is about the legendary pirate Sinbad. This was a 2D animated film from Dreamworks. Sinbad failed to meet box office expectations but still makes the top ten grossing pirate films and has maintained a cult following.

10 Highest Grossing Pirate Films: The Princess Bride
The Princess Bride is loved by everybody I know but it didn't gain popularity until after it was released on VHS and DVD. At the box office The Princess Bride only made $30.8 million.

10 Highest Grossing Pirate Films: Muppet Treasure Island
$34.3 million might seem like a disappointing box office for a franchise like the Muppets but Muppet Treasure Island was actually the second highest grossing Muppet movie, which is unfortunate because it isn't nearly as good as the first three Muppet movies or Muppet Christmas Carol.

10 Highest Grossing Pirate Films: Treasure Planet
Treasure Planet was well liked by critics and was nominated for best animated feature at the Academy Awards but performed very poorly at the box office in the United States. Treasure Planet had a production budget of $140 million but only managed $38.1 million at the box office in the US.

10 Highest Grossing Pirate Films: Return to Neverland
Return to Neverland was pretty much the opposite of Treasure Island. Return to Neverland was cheaply made ($20 million), surpassed that in the US box office alone ($48 million) but was not well liked by critics.

10 Highest Grossing Pirate Films: The Goonies
The Goonies is definitely the best movie on the list but unfortunately it only grossed $61.3 million at the box office. That was not bad by 1985 standards though since it finished 9th at the box office for the year.

10 Highest Grossing Pirate Films: Hook
Hook got very bad reviews but made over $100 million at the box office. Hook was directed by Steven Spielberg and starred Robin Williams, Dustin Hoffman and Julia Roberts. All four were probably at the peak of their popularity and were the driving force behind the box office.

10 Highest Grossing Pirate Films: Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl
The adaptation of the Disney ride was a surprise both in quality and at the box office. Johnny Depp had been one of the great actors in Hollywood for a long time but Pirates of the Caribbean introduced him to a whole lot of new fans.

10 Highest Grossing Pirate Films: Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End
At World's End made more than Curse of the Black Pearl and yet it was a disappointment at the box office, or at least as much as a movie that made over $300 million can be a disappointment.

10 Highest Grossing Pirate Films: Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest
The reason that At World's End was a disappointment was because after The Curse of the Black Pearl started at $305.4 million Dead Man's Chest jumped all the way u to $423.3 million. After the second movie, a lot of people (although not enough) realized that Disney was just churning out crappy sequels and did not see the third movie.

Nice article, short, sweet, and keyword rich :) and my favorite pirate movie would absolutely have to be the pirates of the Caribbean. Though I sincerely doubt I could pick one... it's have to be all of them.

Goonies will always be my favorite, I saw it when I was very little... Pirates of the Caribbean is great, too. Hook and Princess Bride are also classics, i think. Never seen the others, though, guess I'll have to add to their gross amount earned! Great article! ~JC
