10 Horror Movies About Dolls

Check out some of the best horror movies about dolls, and breathe a sigh of relief that you made it through so many playtimes with Satan's miniature minions. The horror movies about dolls here definitely aren't safe for children, and they may just make your poor daughters doll-less:

Child's Play (1988) - I'll start out with one of the horror movies about dolls that actually focuses on a doll throughout the entire film. Chucky starts out as a lifeless, adorable redheaded doll, but his plastic smile twists into a snarl when a serial killer uses voodoo to transfer his soul into the doll. Of course he finds that being plastic isn't so fantastic, and sets out to the steal the body of his new owner, a young boy named Andy. This is the most serious of the slasher movies starring this devilish doll, but it's still one of the horror movies about dolls here that at least has a few comedic moments to go along with the creepiness.

Dead of Night (1945) - However, this is one of the horror movies about dolls where we never get a chance to tear ourselves away from the terror. You can thank this classic horror movie featuring a series of very scary horror vignettes for the many ventriloquist dummies inhabiting horror movies to come, as we learn in one tale of terror that the human half of a ventriloquist act might not be the one truly running the show. If you're looking for truly good horror movies about evil dolls, be sure to see one of the originals (and most frightening) first.

Saw (2004) - Unlike the other horror movies starring dolls here so far, tricycle-riding Billy, the white-faced ventriloquist dummy, isn't the one dishing out the terror; he's just the face of the Jigsaw Killer. He appears on TV screens to inform some of Jigsaw's victims of the deadly positions they find themselves in, giving a face to the unseen puppet master. So while this isn't one of the horror movies here where a demonic doll comes to life, the human hiding behind Billy helps make him one of the most petrifying playthings on this list.

Poltergeist (1982) - And here's another of the horror movies featuring dolls here that features more frights than a doll leaping to life. However, the creepy clown that drags his owner under the bed makes for one of the most unforgettable horror movie moments. (Who buys their kid a clown doll to begin with? Their fake smiles are definitely more frightful than funny). You might also want to check out the sick 'Scary Movie 2' spoof of this scene.

Trilogy of Terror (1975) - Dolls apparently have a hard time carrying whole horror movies. This frightening made-for-TV flick is yet another that is a collection of terrifying tales, but the aboriginal warrior doll with razor-sharp teeth in one segment definitely stands out. As it turns out, the fetish doll contains the spirit of a ferocious Zuni hunter, and it's not long before his spirit is unleashed. Sure it's one of the dolls of horror movies here that seems pretty silly now, but check out an image of it and try to imagine seeing it as a kid.

Asylum (1972) - And here's another of the horror movies featuring dolls that combines frightful fables, but this one does it in a very clever way. A doctor who has applied for a position at an insane asylum must deduce which of four patients is actually a doctor there in order to win the job. The final tale told is of a man who makes tiny, realistic dolls, one of which he wants to project his life force into. He achieves this, and it's extremely unnerving to watch his tiny creation creep about the asylum looking for trouble (there's just something even more disturbing about the dolls of horror movies meant to look human, but not quite).

Magic (1978) - And because one ventriloquist act isn't enough, here's another of the horror movies about dolls starring a dummy (although I wouldn't call Fats that to his face). Anthony Hopkins stars as the hand that the doll takes control of and stains with blood, and it's movies like this that make us all wonder how men like Jeff Dunham don't go mad hanging around their haunting hunks of wood.

Dolls (1987) - You won't find horror movies featuring more evil dolls than this one. In this campy cult classic, a dysfunctional family has to seek shelter from a storm in an old house. Here they find that the inhabitants are a seemingly kindly old couple and their very creepy collection of dolls. Other travelers show up, and it's these youngsters that first incite the wrath of the bloodthirsty dolls (who are possessed by immoral souls being forced to pay for their crimes) and their tiny teeth. It might not be one of the best horror movies you'll ever see, but you'll likely still enjoy seeing these precious, porcelain precursors to Chucky.

Tales from the Hood (1995) - And, once again, we have a setup that allows for multiple mini horror movies to be mashed together. This one has a trio of teen drug dealers arriving at a funeral home to purchase drugs from its eccentric owner. While they are there, he tells them tales of some his latest clients, showing them the bodies as he relates how they came to reside there. However, one body isn't human; it's a doll. He then tells the tale of how a former KKK member was attacked by a doll (and later dolls) supposedly possessed by the spirits of tortured slaves. In another bizarre twist, the dolls had all leapt to life from a painting of a voodoo priestess and her tiny terrors. Again, it's not one of the best horror movies you'll ever see, but it's worth watching for all its wacky weirdness.

Puppetmaster (1989) - If you're looking for horror movies about evil dolls for your own riff-fest, check out the many works of Charles Band, including this classic. It's one weird movie, starting out with Nazis and a puppet master who creates living dolls and ending with the living puppets on a bloodthirsty rampage. There are also psychics, including a woman that talks to her stuffed dog, leeches, and gypsies. In other words, it's one great movie to get all MST3K to.
