When boys get to a certain age, they no longer have an interest in traditional birthday parties. Having random family members and a few friends singing "Happy Birthday," followed by stuffing your face with cake and ice cream isn't their idea of a great time. They need excitement, laughs and adventure.
Keep in mind that these birthday party ideas are mostly for boys between the ages of 9 and 13, since I believe this is a difficult age to plan for.
1. Paint Ball
What kid doesn't want a gun filled with paint? Obviously this sport is best for older kids who understand paint ball can be a dangerous sport. You may need to find a paint ball place suitable for kids.
2. Arcades
A handful of tokens with a few friends can provide several hours of entertainment. If you are in a safe location, you may even want to just drop the boy and friends off with a set amount of money. This, of course, depends on the age of the kids.
3. Zoo
If they are right at that age where they aren't quite old enough for some things but still interested in zoo animals, a day at the zoo may provide a perfect birthday party. Some zoos have birthday party packages, so be sure to check into this.
4. Science Center
Most boys love science - especially cool science in action. Take the kid out for an afternoon at the science center, and focus on what exhibits he wants to do. You may want to check ahead for pricing though, since some activities can be expensive.
5. Amusement Park
If his birthday is in the right season, an amusement park can be a great place to take the birthday kid. Most likely he'll want to go with a friend, and if he's old enough, can go unattended. Just be sure you send enough money for food, games and extras.
6. Movie Theater
Sometimes simple is best, and there's a movie or two he's just dying to see. Movies tend to be expensive for every day, so a birthday is a perfect excuse to go.
7. Roller Skating
If you have a roller skating ring (or roller blading), it's a great place to have a party. Often times, birthday packages are available, so be sure to check ahead. Also, since it's not as popular of a sport as it once was, make sure the kid is fully interested as well.
8. Swimming
Depending on the time of year, you can always plan a trip to the local pool. If the weather is cold, indoor pools are always an option. If you have a pool in your backyard, you could allow him to invite several friends over to have a private pool party. Local pools often have options for renting for a few hours, too.
9. Pizza Place
Chucky Cheese may be too "childish" for older boys, but some areas have other options for pizza and games. Even a place that has a small game room can be entertaining enough for a boy and a few friends. CiCi's Pizza, Incredible Pizza or even some Pizza Huts and Godfathers have small game rooms.
10. Fishing
One of the cheapest, most cost effective birthday parties you can have is at a local fishing spot. All you will really need (assuming you have fishing gear already) is a fishing license, bait and lunch. This is an especially awesome birthday party to plan if your boy and his friends love to fish!
Please feel free to add your own ideas to this list!
