10 Ideas for a Part-Time Job

Making Money in Your Free Time

Have you thought about running a business in your free time, or are looking to get out of your current job and want to try your hand at entrepreneurship before jumping in? These suggestions are meant to get your creative juices flowing. Try one of them, or use them as a springboard for your own ideas:

1. Jewelry Making
For the more creative of you out there, maybe you'd like to try making your own jewelry. Work with beads, wire, or even metalsmithing to make your creations and sell them so others can enjoy it as well. Crafts fairs and boutiques are always looking for well-designed, quality jewelry.

2. At-Home Medical Transcriptionist
Hospitals and doctor's offices are both looking for transcriptionists who can work with medical records and insurance paperwork. Courses in medical coding and terminology will aid you in this endeavor, but the work can all be done without ever leaving your home.

3. Database Searching
In a similar vein to transcribing, with computer database searching you'll be handling public records to assist clients in finding estranged family members, perform background checks on boy/girlfriends, verify information from employees, and other information. Your clients would span from suspicious housewives to Fortune 500 company businessmen.

4. Computer Tutoring
Computer skills are very much in demand by both individuals and companies. Maybe you're an expert in HTML, or you know Java and C++ like the back of your hand. Even knowledge of word processing techniques is a marketable skill. Consider teaching a night class at your local community college or other community venue to establish yourself as an expert, then promote your service through that.

5. Attic Cleaning
Cleaning remains one of the most popular businesses because there will always be someone who has neither the time nor the inclination to clean out their habitat. Especially for rooms like the attic or garage people are reluctant to spend valuable time that could be better spent elsewhere. If the idea of physical exertion and dust doesn't disturb you, this may be something you'd be interested in. If you're willing to charge for hauling away their unwanted junk, a suitable vehicle will be required. Remember, people can store anything in their attic, so be prepared to haul away, well, anything.

6. Selling Antiques
Here's where you can put all those garage sale skills to good use. With a little research you can often find treasures among other people's trash Using a little tender love and care, you can revive the beauty in antique items and resell them at antique fairs or boutiques so others can enjoy them as well.

7. Home Organizer
Are you a bit of a neat freak? Then you're perfect for this job. Many people have a lot of trouble keeping their house in order, and would gladly pay anyone (you for example) to help them reclaim their closets, overcome their messy office, and conquer the clutter. This is particularly well-suited for a part-time job, as very often people with a 9-to-5 schedule will prefer to hire you on a weekend.

8. Lawn and Garden Maintenance
For the frustrated gardener, there are all sorts of companies both executive and retail that want a green grass and well-planted shrubbery. Become their regular lawncare developer with incentives for repeat customers.

9. Home Inspection
This option has become more popular in recent years. Inspect other peoples' houses before they move in to ensure everything is sound. Your work could actually save someone's life if you discover that the building isn't structurally safe, and you can refer your future homeowners to contractors who will repair it. You need to know something about building codes in your area and have a working knowledge of construction.

10. Personal Coach/Trainer
Health has become an obsession in America, and every day there are more people looking for someone to help them become optimally fit. By becoming someone's personal coach you support your client physically and emotionally on their journey to losing weight and toning muscle. You can promote your business at gyms, spas, and anywhere else athleticism is the major theme.
