10 Memorable Movie Quotes and What they Mean to Me

Corinne Hall
A great movie quote is a truly magical thing. It's that "Ah-ha" moment when you suddenly connect with a character, and in that moment, you understand them, and in some way, you see yourself within them. Almost everyone has a favorite quote from their favorite movie that they can instantly recall, and they will even try to insert it into everyday conversation when the proper outlet arises.

My top ten movie quotes span all genres and years of movie making. Some made me laugh, some made me cry, but everyone of them instantly reminds me of a movie moment I will never forget.

10. " As If" - Clueless - 1995 This is probably the trademark saying from this movie. It is used by almost every character at some point during the film. I love this quote because it just sums up the entire High School experience. So much is being said with just two little words. It can be used in any situation and can mean basically whatever you want it to mean. In the movie Clueless alone it is used to mean "No Way" "Get Away" "You've Got to Be Kidding" and "Yeah Right".

9. "The Greatest Thing You'll Ever Learn Is Just to Love and Be Loved in Return"- Moulin Rouge-2001 - This quote is first used by the character Toulous-Lautrec to inspire the character Christian to the bohemian ideals of Beauty, Truth, and Love. It is also echoed by Christian as the final line of the film as he sits down inspired to write the story of his and Satine's tragic affair. The point of this quote is a "better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all " sentiment. To me, it means that love can inspire you to do great things if you just open yourself up to the possibility. It also means that you may risk a lot on love but that you will also get a lot out of it.

8. "Take Only What You Need to Survive" - Spaceballs- 1987 - Spaceballs is probably one of the funniest movies I have ever seen. This quote is used by the character Lone Starr to instruct the spoiled Princess Vespa on what to take from her luggage when they are forced to make a crash landing. A few frames later you see the entire crew carrying the Princess' luggage through the desert because she can't live without any of it. I love this quote because it never fails to give me a laugh. It is primarily used to me by my best friend when she is trying to hurry me out of the house somewhere. Most likely, if it is somewhere that requires me to pack. It's not life changing. It's not profound. It's just funny.

7. "Looks Like You Have Been Missing A Lot of Work Lately" "I wouldn't say I have been 'missing it, Bob"- Office Space -1999- For anyone who has ever spent 8 hours a day in a small cubical wishing that their boss would just leave them alone, there is no truer movie than Office Space. This quote comes from a scene in the film when Peter Gibbons is fed up with his boring, waste, of a job and his pain in the neck boss and decides to just not go to work anymore. When confronted by upper management about his absence he point blank fires back that he has not been missing the work. This quote always reminds me to remember how much more their is to life than working. Now, not to say that I believe that we all should have Peter's complete lack of concern for his work but that we should Work to Live rather than Live to Work.

6. "To Bridget Who Can Not Cook, But Who We Love Just As She Is" - Bridget Jone's Diary- 2001 - This quote is offered as a birthday toast by Bridget's friends after Bridget invites them over for her birthday feast and then has some difficulty pulling off her menu. This quote always reminds me of the importance of having dear, close friends who accept you for who you are. They love you regardless of your many faults, and know that the good parts of you far outweigh the bad.

5. "Toe Pick" The Cutting Edge- 1992- This is one of those scenes where everyone who has seen the movie remembers it. The first time Doug puts on figure skates and doesn't understand what the little claw at the tip is for. What follows next is a series of clips with Doug falling every time he tries to get up on his toes to catch speed to keep up with Kate and her ribbing him all the way. I love this quote because it is so perfect for their relationship. They fuss and fight but at the end of the day they care about each other. That's really about all anyone can ask for in a relationship.

4. "Beginnings are Scary, Endings are Usually Sad, but It's the middle that counts the most. Try to remember that when you find yourself at a new beginning. Just give hope and chance to float up and it will'" -Hope Floats 1998- These are the closing lines to this very under appreciated movie. I love this quote because it reminds me that every new beginning is a chance for something great. You just have to be willing to believe that.

3. "You Jump, I Jump"- Titanic 1997- One of the biggest grossing films of all time. While today, it had become something of a punch line. In 1997, it was pure gold. This quote is first said by Jack as tries to talk Rose out of marrying Cal. He is referring to their first meeting when she was attempting to throw herself off the back of Titanic and he told her that he was too involved and that if she jumped he would have to jump in after her. Throughout this movie this became a catch phrase for their relationship with Rose repeating it Jack after she literally jumps out of her lifeboat back onto the doomed ship. I love this quote because it shows how two people can have such unity in their relationship. They are completely invested in each other and can not turn away no matter how difficult the circumstances.

2. "May the Force Be With You" - Star Wars 1978- Pretty much everyone in modern culture has used this quote at some point. We generally use it to mean "Good Luck" to someone on a tough task . It's telling that the first time this iconic quote is uttered is by Han Solo as he watches Luke board his fighter for the climatic mission to the death star. Han was the most resistant to the idea of the force, yet becomes one of the first to completely acknowledge just how powerful The Force actually is. To me, this quote means being willing to believe in something bigger than yourself and being willing to challenge yourself on faith.

1. "Frankly, My Dear, I Don't Give a Damn"- Gone With the Wind- 1939- This probably one of the most recognized quotes in all of movie history. The famous last words between Rhett Butler and Scarlet O'Hara. Being an Atlanta native, I have always had a soft spot in my heart for this movie. The history lesson that it gives through a beautiful love story makes for the almost perfect movie.
