10 Most Profitable Films of the Decade

Terri Beck
Here is my list of the 10 most profitable films of the decade. This does not necessarily mean they are the best movies of the last 10 years, just the one that made the most profit. I also think these are some really good movies because, usually, a lot of people do not go see really bad movies. I say usually because profitable movies do not ALWAYS equal good movies. The list is going backwards by year, so I will start with the most profitable film of 2009. Enjoy!

1. Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (2009)
Starring Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint, and Emma Watson this blockbuster was clearly the top-grossing movie of 2009. To Harry Potter fans this comes as no surprise. The film made $935,230, 924 and spent about 4 months in the theater. The Harry Potter books are a huge success, of course when they are made into movies they become an even bigger success!

2. The Dark Knight (2008)
This film stars Christian Bale, Aaron Eckhart, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Gary Oldman, and Heath Ledger. This film also ran about 4 months and grossed $1,001,842,429 making it the most profitable movie of 2008. Heath Ledger's death sadly made this movie make even more money. It is a great film and very different from the Batman's before it.

3. Pirate's of the Caribbean: At World's End (2007)
The third film in the series, Johnny Depp and Keira Knightley come together once again. Most everyone loves to see Mr. Depp as the fabulous Jack Sparrow. This movie took in $935,230,924, most of which was brought in during the first month.

4. Pirate's of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest (2006)
Two years in a row the Pirate's of the Caribbean series took number one as the highest grossing movies. Does this surprise anyone? This time the film took in $1,066,179,725. Wow, a little over a billion dollars!

5. Harry Potter and The Goblet of Fire (2005)
Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint, and Emma Watson are the precocious trio in this top grossing film of 2005. This movie took in $896,016,159, a little less than "The Half-Blood Prince" but nothing to laugh about.

6. Shrek 2 (2004)
With an all-star cast this lovable movie had no problem becoming the top grossing film of 2004. Starring Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy, Cameron Diaz and a host of other greats, this film took in $919,838,758. With such a brilliant cast children and adults alike clearly loved this animated monster movie.

7. The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (2003)
This is the third movie of The Lord of The Rings series, starring Elijah Wood and Sean Astin. This movie took in $1,119,263,306. It's no surprise because who can resist those Hobbits? The movie is visually astounded and undoubtedly belongs on this list.

8. The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers (2002)
This is the 2nd movie in the series and brought in $926,287,400. This movie also stars Elijah Wood and Sean Astin, as well as many others. All of the movies in the Lord of the Rings series are wonderful and deserve a spot on my list.

9. Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (2001)
This is the first movie in the Harry Potter series. This movie brought in $974,773,550 making it the top grossing film of 2001. This series wins for being the top grossing series of the decade. Of course six films were released this decade and only half of them were top grossing films but I don't think J.K. Rowling's is going to complain about that.

10. Mission Impossible 2 (2000)
This action film starring Tom Cruise made $546,388,105 and is the lowest top grossing film on the list by far. It is still a great movie but it probably did not make as much money because it is more of a movie for adults. The other top grossing films are entertaining to all ages, which clearly makes a movie more profitable.

It will be exciting to see what the next decade brings us when it comes to movies. Will there be any more sequels on this list that are the most profitable movies. It certainly is a possibility!
