10 Movie Quotes You Can Apply to Everyday Life

Movies can teach a lesson. Many times it is in the plot. However sometimes it is in the lines. I have my favorite ten movie quotes that I tell myself when life gets a little hairy, including where they came from and who said it. Enjoy!

1. Quote:Life's a box of chocolates Forrest. You never know what you're gonna get.

Movie: Forrest Gump
Actress: Sally Fields
Context: Forrest's mom reminds Forrest that life is unpredictable in a way Forrest can understand
Why I use it: If life is a bunch of chocolates, man there are some nasty tasting chocolates out there. This quote reminds me that unless I get the labeled box life in the end I don't know what I am going to get however neither does anyone else

2. Quote: Do or do not. There is no try.

Movie: Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back
Actor: Frank Oz
Context: Yoda gives Luke a task. Luke says he will try however Yoda responds with this famous movie quote
Why I use it: If I cut out the gray area in life, things for me are a lot easier to digest. Even if I tried to do homework or I tried to get somewhere on time, I either did one of two things in either situation: I did it or I didn't do it. No ifs and or buts. Make less excuses for myself

3. Quote: Hello. My name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die.

Movie: The Princess Bride
Actor: Mandy Patinkin
Context: Inigo finally meets the man who killed his father and has been waiting to say this quote.
Why I use it: Lots of preparation always pays off. Even if you don't see the reward soon (like Inigo waited years and years to say his line to his foe) the reward will still be worth it in the end. I say this to myself especially during semester long projects.

4. Quote:Just keep swimming!

Movie: Finding Nemo
Actress: Ellen DeGeneres
Context: A clue to finding Marlin's son has fell into the depths of the ocean. His friend Dorry tells him to just keep swimming and they will eventually find it.
Why I use it: This is a funnier way of saying "Never give up." My family has turned this phrase into " Just Keep { fill in whatever task you need to keep doing} ", ex sewing, reading, walking, running etc.

5. Quote: I'm going to make him an offer he can't refuse

Movie: The Godfather
Actor: Marlon Brando
Context: The Godfather assures a friend that a deal he said can happen WILL happen and that this is how its going to happen.
Why I use it: If I am looking for a job or flirting with a guy, show my best features and make them do anything but refuse me. This quote reminds me to always give 100% so that whatever I am " offering " cannot be refused.

6. Quote: Toga! Toga! Toga!

Movie: Animal House
Actor: John Belushi
Context: To cheer up their spirits of being in trouble, the frat house decides there is no better way to solve this than to throw a toga party.
Why I use it: That although times may get hairy, its sometimes better to put every thing down and just relax, whether its watching T.V., napping, or dancing and drinking in a bed sheet like the boys in Animal House. Useful during finals, that's for sure.

7. Quote: May the force be with you

Movie: Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope
Actor: Harrison Ford
Context: Han Solo says this famous movie quote to Luke Skywalker who is about to battle against the Death Star
Why I use it: This is a WAY cooler way of saying "Good Luck" Everybody knows it, and although it's a little nerdy, you know everyone will understand and know what you are talking about. I say this to my friends when they need a little extra help.

8. Quote: There's no crying in baseball!

Movie: A League of Their Own
Actor: Tom Hanks
Context: Coach upsets one of his female players, who then starts to cry. He flips out in the dugout screaming this line.
Why I use it: Sometimes there are good times to cry. There are also times NOT to cry. I say this movie quote to myself when I am feeling upset but need to not cry.

9.Quote: That's not fair!

Movie: Labyrinth
Actress: Jennifer Connelly
Context: Jareth cuts Sarah's time to solve the labyrinth by hours, making Sarah upset and exclaiming that it is not fair. Jareth then asks her what her reference is for "fair"
Why I use it: Who doesn't say " That's not fair" to something in their lives. I think of this movie and the fact that she says this line very often and that although some things make stink and appear not fair, it is far worse in other places. It makes me appreciate what I have more.

10. Quote: Never tell me the odds

Movie: Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back
Actor: Harrison Ford
Context: An android is telling Han Solo the odds of surviving their situation. This movie quote is how Han Solo responds.
Why I use it: I would totally agree with Han on this one. I am a science person by background so numbers is what I am all about. However when it comes to life, don't tell me the stats and instead just let me try! This was a great motivation when I applied to colleges.
