10 Movies for a Universal Studios Orlando Vacation

Drew Taylor
With family vacation time at a premium, it is important to make the most of a trip to Universal Studios Orlando. One simple strategy is to begin your vacation at home with family movie nights. The attractions at Universal Studios stand out on their own, but watching movies will build anticipation and help kids better appreciate classic characters, such as E.T. and Jaws.

There are plenty of viewing choices since the park's attractions feature dozens of popular movie and TV characters. Here are ten suggestions with something for everyone in the family; from toddlers to adults.

"E.T.: The Extra Terrestrial" (1982)
This classic movie tells the story of E.T., a lost alien. The plot holds up well over time and the kid-centric action makes it especially memorable for kids. The 2002 version features minor tweaks, but parents may want to view this PG movie to determine if it is appropriate for their children. Be sure to serve Reese's Pieces candy at your "E.T." screening - wearing a red hoodie is optional.

"Shrek" (2001)
Also rated PG, the "Shrek" franchise includes four films perfect for two double feature movie nights. The 4D ride at Universal Studios is a bit of a throwback because it shows Princess Fiona preparing for her wedding.

"Men in Black" (1997)
A sci-fi comedy in the same vein as "Ghostbusters," this Will Smith blockbuster, rated PG-13, follows secret agents tasked with policing aliens on Earth.

"The Simpsons Movie" (2007)
Rated PG-13, "The Simpsons Movie" introduces viewers to Spider Pig and his catchy theme song as the Simpsons work to save Springfield from total destruction.

"Jaws" (1975)
An enormous great white shark terrorizes a small island community full of tourists. With the unforgettable theme song, this chilling PG movie uses suspense to scare viewers.

"Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius" (2001)
Starring cartoon characters from the popular Nickelodeon series, this G rated movie lets Jimmy Neutron play the hero when he helps the other children travel to space to save their parents from aliens.

"Twister" (1996)
Stormchasers track tornadoes and try to use an experimental invention to collect scientific data. Rated PG-13, this movie captures the essence of the storms with flying debris and loud noises.

"The Mummy" (1999)
In this sci-fi action movie with comical overtones, an archaeological dig awakens a mummy in the ancient city of Hamunaptra. Rated PG-13, this movie's special effects make the distinguishing mummy and scarab beetles seem real.

"Curious George" (2006)
In this G rated animated movie, George takes on New York as the man in the yellow hat, voiced by Will Ferrell, tries to keep him out of trouble.

"Beetlejuice" (1988)
A ghost couple enlists Beetlejuice to rid their home of pesky humans. Played by Michael Keaton, Beetlejuice pops in to add crass humor to this PG rated movie perfect for teens.
