1. Halloween (1978)
Maybe it's a little cliche what with the title and all, but it's a classic. And there are also remakes for those looking for those looking for something a little more modern. Michael Myers is totally memorable and will have you checking your closets long after you're done watching this one.
2. Poltergeist (1982)
They're here! Steven Spielberg's classic ghost story is one I know I personally have never forgotten. And it will definitely leave you wondering what kind of land your house has been built on! Look for an amusing appearance by Zelda Rubinstein as the family's medium to the 'other side'.
3. I Am Legend (2007)
I can't tell you how much I thought about this film after having seen it in theaters. Just the idea of Will Smith being the last normal man on Earth will have your mind reeling in no time. But pepper in some zombie-like creatures and a very interesting plot and you've got yourself a great time.
4. The Shining (1980)
Stephen King scares the heck out of us again with the story of a family on holiday at an isolated hotel for the winter. Watch as Jack Nicholson takes a turn towards evil and Shelley Duvall tries to head him off! It's sure to make you jump in all the right places.
5. A Nightmare On Elm Street (1984)
No scary movie list would be complete without this Wes Craven classic! Freddy Krueger is ghoulish and the story is so dark and twisted, it's a no-brainer that if you're looking for a good Halloween night fright, this is a great choice.
6. The Exorcist (1973)
Mixing horror with religion can always make a film terrifying, but throw in the fact that a small child is involved and you've got a story that will leave you disturbed. Hey, at least it's memorable, right?
7. Aliens (1986)
My favorite in the series, Aliens, directed by James Cameron, is the second installment in this set of sci-fi/horror films. Ripley (Sigourney Weaver) has been brought back from sleep and discovers that a colony has been established on an alien-infested planet. She then goes with a small team to infiltrate and try to find any surviving colonists. Michael Biehn is wonderful as usual and there are alot of hilarious one liners, aside from the terrifying aliens popping up now and then.
8. Scream (1996)
At first glance, Scream might seem like your typical teen slasher movie, but it's just so much more. With a list of great '90's actors (David Arquette, Drew Barrymoore, Neve Campbell, Courtney Cox, and Rose McGowan (just to name a few!), and of course that unforgettable mask, Wes Craven yet again pushed the envelope with his unique ideas and left us with a great concept and a great thriller.
9. The Silence of the Lambs (1991)
Anthony Hopkins and Jodie Foster are pure gold in this thriller. An FBI agent must try to get into a killer's mind in order to cath another killer, and it's a movie that will have you rooting for a villian, though it'll make you feel strange about doing so. It's no wonder this was such a big hit at the Oscars in it's day.
10. Se7en (1995)
Morgan Freeman and Brad Pitt are utterly amazing in this highly disturbing but thought-invoking film about two detectives trying to find a killer. But the real kicker is what this killer's game is - to brutally murder his victims with the seven deadly sins. Yikes!
Happy vieiwing!

Classic '80s Movie: A Nightmare on Elm Street Took Extreme Horror into O...What made the first A Nightmare on Elm Street a movie classic during the '80s was the combination of the mystery of killer Freddy Krueger and the film's concept of how and when...
Classic 80's Movies: Nightmare on Elm StreetA Nightmare On Elm Street remains one of the most popular films of the Eighties.- Nightmare on Elm Street: A Horror Fan's Beef With the SeriesWhile I love the Nightmare on Elm Street series, I find that I do a great deal of complaining as I watch them as an adult. I have ultimately determined that most of Freddy's victims deserved what they got.
A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream WarriorsThis sequel recently played at the New Beverly Cinema as part of Diablo Cody's "Mondo Diablo" film festival, and this gave me my first chance to see it on the big screen.- Review of A Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy's RevengeSome things dead should be left dead, like this movie. Thankfully, this little known crap-fest was quickly forgotten in the overall franchise.
