1. Toys for Tots
The U.S. Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots program is a non-profit public charity that provides funding and support for the annual toy collection and distribution campaigns. There are campaigns annually covering all 50 states in over 500 communities including Metro Detroit. Toy collection begins in October and lasts until December 22. The distribution normally takes place December 23rd and December 24th by members of the community who drop of the new, unwrapped toys in collection boxes set up at local businesses. The success of the campaign depends on the generosity and support of the local community and Metro Detroit has been a longtime supporter of this campaign. 2. Salvation Army
Chances are if you are out and about during the holiday season in Metro Detroit you have come across a volunteer from the Salvation Army, ringing a bell and standing next to the traditional red kettle. This tradition began in 1901, thanks to Salvation Army Captain Joseph McFee who was distraught because of the large number of poor individuals in San Francisco during the holiday season. This campaign has since spread nationwide and today assists more than four-and-a-half million people during the Thanksgiving and Christmas season. With the donations that are collected, the Salvation Army provides Christmas dinners, clothing and toys for needy families. 3. Meals on Wheels
Meals on Wheels Association of America represents those who provide meals to people in need and is the oldest and largest organization of its kind. They provide nutritious meals to men and women who are elderly, homebound, disabled, frail or at risk. They are only able to provide this service with the help of volunteers and generous donations. 4. Barat Child and Family Services
The Barat House of Detroit provides 24 hour care, 365 days a year to girls ages 12-17 who are survivors of abuse, neglect and abandonment. They focus on emotional recovery and mentoring as well as educational opportunities and life skills in hopes of leading the girls into successful adulthood. Donations can be made at:

5. Capuchin Soup Kitchen
The Capuchin Soup Kitchen provides emergency food to those in need. Capuchin also accepts the donation of clean quality clothing for men, women and children. At Christmas time, toys and food baskets are distributed to families in need as well as toys for families with children. The Capuchin Soup Kitchen receives 99.5% of all funding from individual and corporate contributions and special events. Monetary donations can be sent to:

6. The Children's Center
The Children's Center of Detroit helps children and families in need. They deal with issues such as teen pregnancy, abuse and neglect, mental illness, foster care and many more challenges that families face. Donations can be made to:

7. Old Newsboys' Goodfellow Fund of Detroit
The Old Newsboys' Goodfellow Fund of Detroit is a 94-year-old charity with a mission to see to it that there is "No Kiddies without a Christmas." Every year during the Thanksgiving and Christmas holiday season, they distribute holiday gift boxes to children in the Detroit, Hamtramck and Highland Park areas. Members of the organization can be found on the streets of Detroit annually, beginning the Monday after Thanksgiving. 8. Boys Hope/Girls Hope of Detroit
The Boys Hope/Girls Hope of Detroit provides long-term, value-centered homes as well as a quality education through college. Their goal is to help academically capable and motivated children in need to meet their full potential. 9. The Detroit Institute for Children
The DIC provides outpatient and in-school medical care to children with disabilities. Since 1920, the DIC has treated disabled children using innovative technology, regardless of their ability to pay. 10. March of Dimes
The March of Dimes works to improve the health of babies through research and education. They have been successful at preventing birth defects, premature birth and infant mortality through community services and advocacy.
