It turns out that the final book, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, is so long and complicated that it was impossible to make all of it fit into one movie. So, they are going to torture fans by spreading out the conclusion over two more movies. Part 1 and Part 2. Why are fans excited?
1. The story is finally coming to an end.
We have been following the plight of Harry Potter, and his close friends Hermione Granger and Ron Weasley, as they fight against the evil of He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named, also known as Lord Voldemort. Each installment of the story has answered a few questions, but left even more unanswered. Deathly Hallows is the one that is supposed to answer all of the questions.
Plus, we've started this long journey together. There is a feeling of unfinished business to simply skip the ending.
Grab tissues, though, because this is the story where it seems like everyone dies, whether or not they should. This will be spread out between the last two movies. (Part 2 is scheduled to come out July 15, 2011.)
2. Live action may make it more interesting.
Let's be honest. You were so excited to get all of your questions answered that you stayed up all night trying to read Deathly Hallows all at once. But you found that a lot of it just was Harry Potter et. al. moving from place to place. The pace of the final books was a little slow in many areas. Is it possible that putting it all into live action will make it more interesting? What kinds of creative license have the screenwriters taken with the story?
Think of the Quidditch scenes in the previous movies. They were definitely full of more mayhem and action that any of the sequences in the books. Maybe the Horcrux hunts will be the same?
3. All of your questions will finally be answered!
Or will they? Is the movie going to take repeat viewings to catch everything after it is subtly explained, like a well-orchestrated Usual Suspects? Or is it going to leave you frustrated and even more confused? That in and of itself may make you want to try to watch it again, to find out what you missed.
4. Where will they pause the story for the cliffhanger?
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, the book, was so long it had to made into two movies. Where are they going to pause the story? All of the other movies ended around summertime, at the end of a school year. That made for a very natural stopping point. It had better be a good cliffhanger, otherwise people won't want to come out for Part 2!
5. What are they going to change?
There are always differences between books and movies. It's a Hollywood necessity. Sometimes they do it to make the time go by faster, which is fine. Sometimes they need to blend characters together to pay fewer actors. Sometimes they add stuff to better explain something in live action, as it translates differently that way. Some of us in the audience will be nerdy, comparing every minor detail, and probably complaining about it for a while. MuggleNet is already reporting major plot changes with Hedwig, Harry's snowy owl.
6. More snogging?
Watching relationships unfold over the years has been entertaining, especially for the younger crowds. There was a bit of snogging in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. Will we see more of those hookups in Deathly Hallows? We all know how the story ends, and who ends up with whom.......and then there is that Weasley Wedding. Have you ever seen a witch's wedding? And you thought yours was bad....
7. Snape - Good or Evil?
One of the biggest questions was why did Snape kill Dumbledore? Is he trying to protect Draco? Whose side is he on? Now that he is taking over as Headmaster, what is going to happen?
8. The Death Eaters are in full force.
This is going to be the darkest of the Harry Potter movies thus far. For those of us who like some dark entertainment here and there, this is a good thing. It also builds up the excitement of the fight between good and evil. The darker it is, the more intense the fight is going to be. Plus the Death Eaters have some pretty freaky tricks up their sleeves, that always end up looking great on film.
9. What is a Horcrux?
Every time they try to bring some aspect of Harry Potter to life, it never is exactly the way that I had envisioned it. Usually it is better. Seeing the portrayal of the Horcruxes on the big screen is destined to be interesting. Harry didn't even know what they looked like. And what about this wand that Voldemort seeks?
10. Costumes and characters.
The costuming in the movies are usually pretty good. It has been interesting to watch how the character costumes have changed over the years, as different directors take over different movies. But not only will you see great costumes on screen, how many people are dressing up to go to the movie? I have a couple of friends who spent lots of money and effort (she sews) to perfect their Albus Dumbledore and Professor McGonagall outfits for Halloween over a decade ago. Prior to kids, they would go to midnight showings, in complete garb. Little kids run amuck with their Harry Potter glasses and hand-drawn lightning scars on their foreheads. How intense will people be at the showings at your movie theatre?
Whatever your reasons are for being excited to see Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 1, it is guaranteed that theatres will be obscenely busy on November 19th. Until then, you can satisfy some of your hunger by visiting some of the following websites:
